Title: Empire of Illusions - The End of Literacy and the Triumph of Spectacle
By: Chris Hedges

About: The subtitle of this book says it all. I've never read Hedges' work before and I haven't finished reading this book yet, but love it so far and I'm more than halfway through. For starters there is a definite liberal bias here, but what I love about this book is how balanced Hedges is in his attacks on what he calls the "illusions" in our society. He talks about the illusions of Literacy, Love, Wisdom, Happiness, and America, attacking Washington, Hollywood, the media, and academia with the same intensity. I can't say I agree with every single thing he says, but its a great read and makes great arguments for the things that are affecting our society (how these fake illusions undermine our free society)...
