View Full Version : 9 Ingredients to avoid in processed foods

If you know me at all, you know that I’m an advocate for whole, unprocessed foods. However, many of us inevitably turn to packaged or processed foods when we are short on time. Maybe we grab a frozen dinner or pizza for a quick dinner for our family. Maybe we grab a quick nutrition bar to satiate our hunger until we can sit down for a real meal. Or maybe, we just don’t like to cook. Whether we like it or not, packaged and processed food has become a huge part of our food industry and, as a result, a part of many of our diets.
Although there are some brands that I hugely advocate for, there are many more that border on outright unhealthy and “scary.” Many packaged foods that seem healthy often contain fillers, preservatives and other ingredients you don’t want in your diet. It is always preferable to choose products that have only a handful of ingredients, all of which should be recognizable. One test to know whether an ingredient is healthy is to ask yourself whether your grandmother would recognize it. If not, there is a good chance the ingredient is less natural food and more man-made chemical. Another good test is whether or not you can easily pronounce the ingredient. If you feel like you need a science degree to pronounce it properly, chances are the ingredient is worth avoiding.

If you do have to resort to a processed food for a snack or dinner (anything canned, packaged, etc.), try to avoid those that contain the ingredients listed in the following chart. Although this isn’t an exhaustive list, these ingredients are some of the most highly processed and least healthy of all:

Artificial Colors

Chemical compounds made from coal-tar derivatives to enhance color.

Linked to allergic reactions, fatigue, asthma, skin rashes, hyperactivity and headaches.

Artificial Flavorings

Cheap chemical mixtures that mimic natural flavors.

Linked to allergic reactions, dermatitis, eczema, hyperactivity and asthma
Can affect enzymes, RNA and thyroid.

Artificial Sweeteners

(Acesulfame-K, Aspartame, Equal®, NutraSweet®, Saccharin, Sweet’n Low®, Sucralose, Splenda® & Sorbitol) Highly-processed, chemically-derived, zero-calorie sweeteners found in diet foods and diet products to reduce calories per serving.

Can negatively impact metabolism. Some have been linked to cancer, dizziness hallucinations and headaches.

Benzoate Preservatives
(BHT, BHA, TBHQ)

Compounds that preserve fats and prevent them from becoming rancid.

May result in hyperactivity, angiodema, asthma, rhinitis, dermatitis, tumors and urticaria. Can affect estrogen balance and levels.

Brominated Vegetable Oil
(BVO)

Chemical that boosts flavor in many citric-based fruit and soft drinks.

Increases triglycerides and cholesterol. Can damage liver, testicles, thyroid, heart and kidneys.

High Fructose Corn Syrup
(HFCS) Cheap alternative to cane and beet sugar

Sustains freshness in baked goods. Blends easily in beverages to maintain sweetness.

May predispose the body to turn fructose into fat. Increases risk for Type-2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer. Isn’t easily metabolized by the liver.

MSG
(Monosodium Glutamate)

Flavor enhancer in restaurant food, salad dressing, chips, frozen entrees, soups and other foods.

May stimulate appetite and cause headaches, nausea, weakness, wheezing, edema, change in heart rate, burning sensations and difficulty in breathing.

Olestra

An indigestible fat substitute used primarily in foods that are fried and baked.

Inhibits absorption of some nutrients. Linked to gastrointestinal disease, diarrhea, gas, cramps, bleeding and incontinence.

Shortening, Hydrogenated and Partially Hydrogenated Oils
(Palm, Soybean and others)

Industrially created fats used in more than 40,000 food products in the U.S.
Cheaper than most other oils.

Contain high levels of trans fats, which raise bad cholesterol and lower good cholesterol, contributing to risk of heart disease.

I've been really trying to watch what I buy for the past few years, but even more so since Ashley's wheat and nut allergy appeared. It's amazing what's in stuff. I find myself buying organic when I can (and it's not too bad in price). If I can't get organic, i get "all natural" if it's available. I do still buy the occasional "junk" (chips, the yellow rice that Ashley likes, ect). I've found an organic, gluten free cereal that I really like. The funny thing is... It's more excpensive at Publix than Whole Foods. The same goes for the maple syrup (and I'm sure other things as well). :uh

I also notice that you don't see many coupons for the "good" foods. Most of them are for the processed items. I do find some, but not very many.

I think I had all those for breakfast this morning :lookaroun :sick

Actually breakfast was very good, whole wheat toast and reduced fat peanut butter (still has some hydrogenated oils though :blush ) and half a grape fruit... with the tiniest sprinkling of some of that stevia sweetener :lookaroun

But the rest of the day was WAY downhill. Convention Center food :blush :sick

I almost don't know what to eat anymore. I was eating my daily yogurt and the massage therapist came over and pointed out my "Light and Fit" was FULL of sugars that are not listed as "sugar" in the ingrediant list.

You almost have to be a Nutritionist to decipher what is actually good for you anymore. *sigh*

Absolutely, because retailers know that people concerned about what's in their food will pay top dollar for organic or all-natural foods, and coupons won't make enough of a difference to encourage those shopping on a budget to pay the sky-high prices for those foods.

Anything ending is "ose" is a sugar...fructose, lactose, maltose, etc. Remember that not all sugar is bad though. lactose occurs naturally in milk, are you going to avoid it because it has sugar? It's the ADDED sugar you need to watch for.

Unless you are going to grow all of your food (and raise your own meats) then you are going to get some preservatives in your food.

right, I ususally look for no added sugar. I don't drink juice out of the bottle unless it says that on it. We've really been trying to eat healthier...Phil has lost 20 pounds! (me? um 5...jerk :rotfl)

oops I meant to quote Mad and Christy..

*sigh* Not yet. My friend who has it was going to send it my way...but he's gotten real busy with the Peter Pan show opening this week (I think previews start today)

He was going to send us P90X and Insanity which I've also heard is an ass kicking.
You still loving it?

And Mad, I'm not TERRIBLY concerned with how much weight I lose...I just am very aware of putting on a few pounds since starting to date Phil a little over a year ago..and that's not the direction I want to head in. *sigh*

We bought those bicycles too! and I can't wait to start riding more and more! :)

If I were you, I'd really look into the Insanity more. Less time consuming, and probably more of what you might want? Less about building muscle, more about burning fat. I know that's what I want anyway :lol And yes, it's awesome. I hate it, but it's awesome :rotfl It just melts weight away, and I barely watch what I eat. If I followed their eating plan I would shrink away to nothing in a couple weeks I think! :lol

That's great about the bikes! :thumbs The key to sticking to a workout is loving what you're doing (or so I hear :lookaroun )
