It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

Thanks for this remembrance, Tom. And on Memorial Day we recognize the fallen veterans or in my case, our family members who served who have passed away, but the day is really for those killed or wounded in service to our country.

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer for us around here, and probably most people. I always take a moment to remember Memorial Day, 1985. The actions on that day changed my life. I remember watching the open tire race cars roar around the track in the Indianapolis 500 on the television in the corner of the living room as I packed my car and then drove to Tallahassee, FL, en route to my first job in which I wasn't employed by my family. . . report date June 1 for training to work at Walt Disney World. :)

I will say a prayer today for my father's father, a U.S. Marine veteran who served in the Pacific islands during World War II. He has been gone for 18 years this October.
