Her final appearance as a regular was in 2007.

Reid made appearances on episodic TV and other soaps including "As the World Turns." In the 1950s, she performed on anthologies such as "Studio One" and "Philco Television Playhouse" during what is recalled as TV's Golden Age.

Fashion designer Alexander McQueen has taken his own life at age 40. His office confirmed his death, saying: 'It is a tragic loss. We are not making a comment at this time out of respect for the McQueen family.' Details have yet to be revealed.

McQueen was born in the East End of London on March 17, 1969. His father was a taxi driver and as a child he made dresses for his three sisters. As a teenager he apprenticed on Savile Row--where he made suits for Prince Charles and Mikhail Gorbachev --before attending Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. It was his graduation collection that caught the eye of influential stylist Isabella Blow. The two became fast and dear friends until Blow committed suicide on May 7, 2007.

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. – Doug Fieger, leader of the power pop band The Knack who sang on the 1979 hit "My Sharona," died Sunday. He was 57.

Fieger, a Detroit-area native, died at his home in Woodland Hills near Los Angeles after battling cancer, according to The Knack's manager, Jake Hooker.

Fieger formed The Knack in Los Angeles 1978, and the group quickly became a staple of Sunset Strip rock clubs. A year later he co-wrote and sang lead vocals on "My Sharona."

Fieger said the song, with its pounding drums and exuberant vocals, was inspired by a girlfriend of four years.

"I had never met a girl like her — ever," he told The Associated Press in a 1994 interview. "She induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn't quit. She was very self-assured. ... She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy."

"My Sharona," an unapologetically anthemic rock song, emerged during disco's heyday and held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard pop chart for six weeks, becoming an FM radio standard.

It became a pop culture phenomenon, parodied by Weird Al Yankovic and others and sampled by rap group Run DMC.

Kathryn Grayson, whose beauty and lilting soprano voice brightened such popular MGM musicals of the 1040s and '50s as "Anchors Aweigh," ''Show Boat" and "Kiss Me Kate," has died at age 88.

Grayson died Wednesday at her Los Angeles home, the actress' longtime secretary and companion, Sally Sherman, told The Associated Press.

"She just went to sleep and didn't wake up," Sherman said Thursday.

Grayson's youthful ambition was to sing opera, but she wasn't able to accomplish that dream until after her movie career ended. While still a teenager, she was placed under contract at MGM at a time when the studio was assembling a stable of musical talent that would dominate the era of great musicals.

"I thought they were wastingc their time and money," Grayson recalled of her first days at the studio. "I even told (studio boss) Louis B. Mayer that. He said he knew a lot more than a 16-year-old girl who is and who isn't good material for pictures.

"He offered a deal: I would make a screen test, and if the studio liked the test, I would shut up forever. If not, I would go.

"It was the longest test in motion picture history. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars; it was almost a two-reeler. I did everything— opera, popular songs, drama, comedy. ... The studio liked it. I told Mr. Mayer I didn't like it. He went home with a heart attack."

ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- Mosi Tatupu, a fan favorite who played 13 seasons for the New England Patriots, died Tuesday at age 54.

Mosi Tatupu spent 13 seasons with the Patriots as a special teams standout and a jack-of-all trades running back.

Ashley O'Brien, a spokeswoman for Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, Mass., said Tatupu was pronounced dead at the hospital. She did not give a cause.

"He was one of those fun guys in the locker room who also had fun on the field," said former Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan, who was one of Tatupu's teammates in New England. "When he went to practice, he had a smile on his face all the time because he was having fun. He enjoyed playing football. He could have played in any era, for anybody at any time. It's a shame that he's gone at such an early age."

Tatupu played 13 seasons with the Patriots, starring as a special teams player (making the Pro Bowl in 1986) and as a jack-of-all trades running back. He was one of the most popular players of his era and even had his own cheering section at Schaefer/Sullivan Stadium called "Mosi's Mooses."

"I think football fans in this area appreciate a lunchpail attitude, someone who shows up for work every day and that's what Mosi did," Grogan said. "I think his personality, the spirit and fun he showed on the field, transferred to fans. That's why they loved him so much."

He rushed for 2,415 yards over his career with the Patriots, scoring 18 touchdowns and averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

"He was not only a really good football player who could do a lot of different things for you, "Grogan said, "from special teams, to goal-line situations, coming out of backfield and catching the ball, blocking."

At the time of his death, Tatupu, a native of American Samoa and considered one of the greatest athletes in the history of Hawaii, was running backs coach at Curry College in Milton, Mass. Tatupu had also coached his son Lofa Tatupu -- now a linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks -- at King Philip Regional High School in Wrentham, Mass.

Marie Osmond's son Michael Blosil took his own life Friday night after leaping to his death from his Los Angeles apartment, E! News confirms.

The 18-year-old reportedly suffered from severe depression in recent years, leaving behind a note which detailed his plans to commit suicide. In it, Blosil explained his loneliness, stating that he felt as if he had no friends and simply did not fit in.

Osmond expressed her grief over the tragedy in a statement released Saturday evening: "My family and I are devastated and in deep shock by the tragic loss of our dear Michael and ask that everyone respect our privacy during this difficult time."

An autopsy will likely be done Sunday.

Back in 2007, Blosil, then age 16, entered a rehab facility for undisclosed treatment. At the time, Osmond released a statement saying "Michael is an amazing young man, shown through his courage in facing his issues. As his mother, I couldn't be more proud of him."

Blosil is one of Osmond and her music producing ex-husband Brian Blosil's seven children, five of whom, including Michael, are adopted.

Prior to any public knowledge of Blosil's emotional issues, Marie fought back against National Enquirer claims that she herself had attempted suicide in 2006, and had been hospitalized in Utah.

Osmond and brother Donny have indefinitely canceled their Las Vegas show at the Flamingo Hotel.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight on Saturday, Donny simply said, "Please pray for my sister and her family."

WESTMORELAND, N.H. – Two of the oldest people in the world have died on the same day.

Mary Josephine Ray, who was certified as the oldest person living in the United States, died Sunday at age 114 years, 294 days. She died at a nursing home in Westmoreland but was active until about two weeks before her death, her granddaughter Katherine Ray said.

"She just enjoyed life. She never thought of dying at all," Katherine Ray said. "She was planning for her birthday party."

Ray died just hours before Daisey Bailey, who was 113 years, 342 days, said L. Stephen Coles, a director of the Gerontology Research Group, which tracks and studies old people and certifies those 110 or older, called supercentenarians.

"It's very rare that two of our supercentenarians die on the same day," Coles said.

The oldest living American is now Neva Morris, of Ames, Iowa, at age 114 years, 216 days. The oldest person in the world is Japan's Kama Chinen at age 114 years, 301 days.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and former television actor Merlin Olsen has died. He was 69.

Utah State University assistant athletic media relations director Zach Fisher says Olsen died Wednesday night.

Ron Lundy, one of the most influential DJs from the golden age of Top 40 AM radio, has died, according to the trade publication Radio Business Report.

Lundy was one of the jocks at WABC-AM New York during that station's long reign as the No. 1 radio station in the country.

Along with WABC colleagues Dan Ingram, Bruce Morrow and Harry Harrison, Lundy helped shape the sound of Top 40 radio around the country - partly thanks to WABC's 50,000-watt clear channel signal, which could be heard for hundreds of miles on a clear night.

(You can hear some of Lundy's bits on this Web site, a wealth of information about WABC and Top 40 radio in general.)

The DJ also has a spot in movie history: It's his voice that Joe Buck (Jon Voight) hears while making his way to New York in "Midnight Cowboy."

Lundy, who moved to Mississippi after retiring from WCBS-FM in the late '90s, reportedly died in a Mississippi hospital of a heart attack.

Singer and guitarist Alex Chilton, who topped the charts as a teen and later became a cult hero with Big Star, died Wednesday. He was 59.

Chilton died at a hospital in New Orleans after experiencing what appeared to be heart problems, said his longtime friend John Fry. Fry said Chilton's wife, Laura, was very distressed by the unexpected death.

"Alex was an amazingly talented person, not just as a musician and vocalist and a songwriter, but he was intelligent and well read and interested in a wide number of music genres," said Fry, the owner of Memphis-based Ardent Studios.

As the teenage singer for the pop-soul outfit the Box Tops, Chilton topped the charts with the band's song "The Letter" in 1967. Their other hits were "Soul Deep" and "Cry Like a Baby." Chilton grew up in Memphis, Tenn., and formed the band with friends from school.

His short run with Big Star brought less mainstream success but made him a cult hero to other rock musicians, as evidenced by the title of the 1987 Replacements song, "Alex Chilton." Big Star's three 1970s albums all earned spots on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest.

Chilton said in a 1987 interview with The Associated Press that he didn't mind flying under the radar with Big Star and later as a solo artist.

"What would be ideal would be to make a ton of money and have nobody know about you," he said. "Fame has a lot of baggage to carry around. I wouldn't want to be like Bruce Springsteen. I don't need that much money and wouldn't want to have 20 bodyguards following me."

"If I did become really popular, the critics probably wouldn't like me all that much," he said. "They like to root for the underdog."

Chilton had been scheduled to perform with Big Star on Saturday at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

"Alex Chilton always messed with your head, charming and amazing you while doing so. His gift for melody was second to none, yet he frequently seemed in disdain of that gift," the festival's creative director, Brent Gulke, said in an e-mail.

(CNN) - Stewart Udall, the last surviving member of John F. Kennedy's presidential cabinet, died Saturday of natural causes, according to a statement released by the Udall family. He was 90 years old.

Udall served as the Interior Secretary for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson from 1961-1969. Before that, he represented Arizona's second congressional district for four terms in the House of Representatives.

Stewart Udall is the father of New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall and the son of former Arizona Supreme Court Justice Levi Udall.

LBJ aide Liz Carpenter dies at 89

From CNN's Alan Duke
(CNN) - Liz Carpenter, a Texas journalist who became a presidential press aide in the Lyndon Johnson White House, died Saturday at the age of 89, according to the Johnson family.

Carpenter served as an aide and press spokesman to Johnson when he was vice president, but she was named press secretary to Lady Bird Johnson when she became the first lady.

"Liz was Mother and Daddy's dawn to midnight 'can do' supporter," Luci Johnson, the president's daughter, said in a written statement. "She had boundless imagination, a rare gift for words, limitless curiosity, a rich sense of humor, a fear of flying and practically no fear of anything else."

Carpenter died at an Austin, Texas hospital of natural causes Saturday, according to Tom Johnson, the former CNN chairman who served with Carpenter in the LBJ administration.

"Liz was a passionate pioneer in the battle for women's rights," Tom Johnson said. "She used every weapon at her disposal in that fight - her splendid writing, her positions of power as a reporter and a press secretary, and her terrific public speaking skills."

A sixth-generation Texan, Carpenter was "filled with laughter, adventure, politics, and story-telling," he said.

"She told me she wanted to live until Hillary Clinton was elected President," he said. "She did her best to live that long. 'We came damn close,' she told me. 'And LBJ will be happy with Obama anyway,' she said."

She has been credited with making humor an integral part of White House politics. The LBJ Library's Web site said President Johnson ordered his speechwriters to consult with her.

"Tell Liz to add some jokes," the president said.

Carpenter was a pioneer as a female journalist. She began covering President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's administration and Congress for the Austin American Statesman newspaper in 1942, the LBJ Library's biography said.

She joined Johnson's vice-presidential staff in 1961, traveling with him on foreign trips to serve as his press aide.

Carpenter was with the Johnsons on the fateful Texas trip on November 22, 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. She wrote the 58 words that Lyndon Johnson spoke to the nation when he landed in Washington after the assassination, the library said.

After Johnson's administration ended in 1969, Carpenter used her skills as a vice president for the public relations firm Hill and Knowlton.

She later moved back to Austin, Texas and remained close to the Johnson family.

"I have had an infinitely more exciting and worthy life because Liz was my mentor and my friend," Luci Johnson said.

Carpenter helped found the National Women's Political Caucus, served on the International Women's Year Commission, White House Conference on Aging, was assistant secretary of Education for Public Affairs, and a member of the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, according to the library.

Just learned my elementary school principal died today in a car wreck. She had to be close to 80. Even when I was a little 5th grader, I think I was bigger than she was. One time, she brought me into her office for not doing my homework for the 100th time, or something.

Even though on that particular occasion I had a valid excuse, it was the straw, I suppose and she broke out the big wooden paddle. I remember she gave me 3 licks . . . and it was like being swatted with a newspaper or maybe spiral notebook. I could tell she felt bad for having to resort to such drastic measures and I straightened up for a little while.

LOS ANGELES – Jaime Escalante, the math teacher who transformed a tough East Los Angeles high school and inspired the movie "Stand and Deliver," died Tuesday. He was 79.

Escalante died at his son's home near Sacramento, after battling bladder cancer for several years, family friend Keith Miller said.

An immigrant from Bolivia, he transformed Garfield High School by motivating struggling students to excel at advanced math and science. The school had more advanced placement calculus students than all but three other public high schools in the country.

Edward James Olmos played Escalante in the 1988 film based on his story.

"Jaime exposed one of the most dangerous myths of our time — that inner city students can't be expected to perform at the highest levels," Olmos said. "Because of him, that destructive idea has been shattered forever."

Escalante was a teacher in La Paz before he emigrated to the U.S. and had to study English at night for years to get his California teaching credentials.

At first he was discouraged by Garfield's "culture of low expectations, gang activity and administrative apathy," Miller said.

Gradually, he overhauled the school's math curriculum, requiring all students to take algebra while enabling those who were previously considered unteachable to master math and pass the advanced placement calculus test. He believed in his students and built their confidence.

Escalante left Garfield in 1991, taught at schools in Sacramento and retired to Bolivia in 2001.

The cast of "Stand and Deliver" recently appealed for donations to help Escalante pay for his alternative cancer treatments.

The identity of the actor supplying the voice of Charlie on Charlie's Angels was supposed to be a secret. "Well, it proved as big a secret as Pearl Harbor," John Forsythe once recalled.

Forsythe, the rare star who was recognizable to audiences whether he was seen presiding over Dynasty catfights or unseen doling out assignments on Charlie's Angels, died Thursday of pneumonia amid a yearlong battle with cancer, his family said today. He was 92.

Dynasty foe Joan Collins remembered Forsythe as "one of the last true gentlemen of the acting profession." Daughter Brooke Forsythe said her father "died as he lived his life, with dignity and grace."

Actor Corin Redgrave dead at 70

By The Associated Press

Corin Redgrave, a member of a British acting dynasty that includes his sisters Vanessa and Lynn, has died at the age of 70.

The Redgrave family said the actor died Tuesday after falling ill at home on Sunday. His wife, Kika Markham, said he died in a London hospital, "surrounded by his family."

Corin Redgrave was less famous than his sisters, but still had success on stage and screen, appearing in dozens of television shows and movies, including "A Man for All Seasons," and "Oh! What A Lovely War" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral" — in which he played Hamish, the hapless groom of wedding number three.

Known also for his radical political stands, Corin Redgrave was a Marxist who protested against the Iraq War, campaigned for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and spoke out in defense of political dissidents. He was a longtime member of the tiny Workers Revolutionary Party, and along with his sister Vanessa in 2004 founded the Peace and Progress Party, which ran several candidates in the 2005 national election.

Corin Redgrave was born July 16, 1939, the son of matinee idol Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, a famous beauty who also had a long theater and film career.

His professional stage career began in 1961 with "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at London's Royal Court Theatre, and continued for almost four decades. He won a Laurence Olivier Award in 1998 for his performance as Boss Whalen in Tennessee Williams' "Not About Nightingales."

In 1995 he wrote a book about his father, "Michael Redgrave: My Father," which was praised for its honest treatment of the older Redgrave's bisexuality.

In 2005 Redgrave received the Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award for his work promoting the life and works of the Bard.

Redgrave had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001, but continued performing and campaigning.

The family was struck by tragedy last year when Vanessa Redgrave's daughter Natasha Richardson, also a successful actress, died after hitting her head while skiing in Canada.

Corin Redgrave is survived by his wife, sons Luke, Harvey and Arden and a daughter, actress Jemma Redgrave. Funeral details were not immediately available.

CNN) -- Actor Christopher Cazenove died in a London hospital after a monthlong battle with a blood infection Wednesday, his family said.
Cazenove was best known for the role of Ben Carrington on TV's "Dynasty," although he appeared on hundreds of television shows over the past four decades.
His death came one week after that of John Forsythe, who played his nemesis on the 1980s prime-time soap opera.
Cazenove, a British-born actor, contracted septicemia in late February, said a statement from his partner, Isabel Davis, and family.
"Despite a valiant fight and the untiring efforts of the wonderful team at St Thomas', he was eventually overwhelmed," the statement said.

Before "Dynasty," Cazenove was well known in the United Kingdom for playing Charles Haslemere in the British series "The Duchess of Duke Street."
He was 66, according to the Internet Movie Database.

Dixie Carter starred as Julia Sugarbaker on TV's "Designing Women."Entertainment Tonight is reporting that actress Dixie Carter, best-known for her role as Julia Sugarbaker on TV's "Designing Women," has died at age 70.

"This has been a terrible blow to our family," ET quotes her husband, Hal Holbrook, as saying. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy. Thank you."

The Tennessee-born Carter, in an interview with The Birmingham News prior to an appearance in 2008, said she was holding out hope for a "Designing Women" reunion at some point.

"People have talked, but it hasn't come to anything," Carter says. "We're all in touch with each other, and we love each other very much. We have such disparate careers. It would be so much fun to pull that together, but it would be very hard."

A beautiful angel moved to my town when I was in early elementary school and all the boys wanted to be her boyfriend. Le Ann Gumfrey was the kind of girl that left her mark on all who knew her. When she moved back to Texas in 5th grade, she was never forgotten. I was surprised, but not shocked, to learn she had grown up to marry a high profile player on the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl teams - tight end Jay Novachek.

Now, Le Ann Novachek is dead of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound and I am very sad to know that she is no longer a part of this world we live in. :(

NEW YORK — Lynn Redgrave, an introspective and independent player in her family's acting dynasty who became a 1960s sensation as the freethinking title character of "Georgy Girl" and later dramatized her troubled past in such one-woman stage performances "Shakespeare for My Father" and "Nightingale," has died. She was 67.

Her publicist Rick Miramontez, speaking on behalf of her children, said Redgrave died peacefully Sunday night at her home in Connecticut. Children Ben, Pema and Annabel were with her.

"Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven year journey with breast cancer," they said in a statement Monday. "She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives. Our entire family asks for privacy through this difficult time."

Her death comes a year after her niece Natasha Richardson died from head injuries sustained in a skiing accident and just a month after the death of her older brother, Corin Redgrave.

The youngest child of Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, Lynn Redgrave never quite managed the acclaim – or notoriety – of elder sibling Vanessa Redgrave, but received Oscar nominations for "Georgy Girl" and "Gods and Monsters," and Tony nominations for "Mrs. Warren's Profession," "Shakespeare for My Father" and "The Constant Wife." In recent years, she also made appearances in the television shows "Ugly Betty," "Law & Order" and "Desperate Housewives."

"Vanessa was the one expected to be the great actress," Lynn Redgrave told The Associated Press in 1999. "It was always, 'Corin's the brain, Vanessa the shining star, oh, and then there's Lynn.'"

In the theater, Redgrave, with her striking dark red hair, often displayed a sunny, sweet and open personality, much like her ebullient offstage personality. It worked well in such shows as "Black Comedy," her Broadway debut in 1972 and again two years later in "My Fat Friend," a comedy about an overweight young woman who sheds pounds to find romance.

Tall and blue-eyed like her sister, she was as open about her personal life as Vanessa has been about politics. In plays and in interviews, Lynn Redgrave confided about her family, her marriage and her health. She acknowledged that she suffered from bulimia and served as a spokeswoman for Weight Watchers. With daughter Annabel Clark, she released a 2004 book about her fight with cancer, "Journal: A Mother and Daughter's Recovery From Breast Cancer."

Dio rose to fame in 1975 as the first lead singer of Rainbow, the heavy metal band put together by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who had just quit Deep Purple.

Dio then replaced legendary vocalist Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath in 1980 with the critically acclaimed album "Heaven And Hell," considered by many critics to be one of the finest heavy metal albums of all time. His on-again, off-again tenure with Black Sabbath touched off an intense debate among fans as to which singer was the true essence of the band — a discussion that lasted until his death

Much of his success occurred after Happy Days, where he became a producer and later a director. IIRC, that is what he wanted to do though. Most Hollywood stars want to stay in front of the camera, but (I am NOT an expert) IMO, the money and the continued success is behind the camera, not in front of it.

And look at Lindsey Lohan. Has anyone seen a recent picture of her? She's only 23, and she looks over 45.It took a big person to take a back seat to the Fonz. I remember Ron saying, he didn't mind the Fonz taking over the show except changing the title would put him over the edge. IMHO, I think it was the Andy Griffith show that allowed him to handle Happy Days and kept him level. Andy Griffith had to do the same when he had to take a back seat to Don Knotts.

I do agree with you that after a actor (especially a child actor) has been sterotyped as a character, they are best to find another avenue in life, ie behind the camera. To find that level of success again is unique.

Dennis Hopper was no Easy Rider.

Hopper, the actor who upended Hollywood with his hippie classic, lost chunks of his career to hard-headedness and drugs, and wound up a revered elder statesman, died Saturday, May 29 at his home in Venice after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer. He was 74, and on seemingly on his ninth, if not tenth, life.

Golden Girls Star Rue McClanahan Dies at 76

By Charlotte Triggs and Stephen M. Silverman

http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20390844,00.html

Golden Girl Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76.

"She passed away at 1 a.m. this morning," her manager, Barbara Lawrence, tells PEOPLE. "She had a massive stroke."

McClanahan, who played man-happy Blanche Devereaux on the still-popular '80s sitcom Golden Girls, had suffered a minor stroke earlier this year while recovering from bypass surgery. Lawrence adds that at the time of her death Thursday, McClanahan “had her family with her. She went in peace.”

Still in syndication, Golden Girls ran on NBC from 1985 to 1992. Only last year, McClanahan's costar, Beatrice Arthur, died from cancer. Estelle Getty died in 2008. Surviving star Betty White, 88, is currently enjoying a remarkable resurgence in her career, having recently hosted Saturday Night Live.

Born in Healdton, Okla., Rue lived in six towns by the time she was 8. Her father was a road builder who moved from one project to another. She found solace in acting ("the only thing I ever wanted to do") and after four years at the University of Tulsa moved to New York, where she worked as a part-time file clerk while trying to find jobs in the theater.

Her first job was off Broadway, in 1957, and she finally hit Broadway in 1969. TV work came from soap operas, until she made it on CBS's Maude, starring Beatrice Arthur, starting in 1972. She played Maude's best friend Vivian.

But it was Golden Girls that put her on the map and led to fame, fortune – and several husbands. In all, she had six, including actor Morrow Wilson, whom she wed in 1997 and who survives her, as does a son, Mark Bish, from her first marriage.

As McClanahan told PEOPLE in 1986: "I've always been lucky enough to marry good cooks. One cooked Greek. One cooked Tex-Mex – chili and stuff." Then, with a laugh, she added, "True, one needed a recipe to make a peanut butter sandwich ..."

Former Major League outfielder Oscar Azocar, whose three-year career was split between the Yankees and Padres, died on Monday, The Associated Press reported. He was 45.

A native of Venezuela, Azocar died at a hospital in Valencia, a press spokesman for one of his former teams, the Navegantes del Magallanes, told the AP.

The Yankees called up the pitcher-turned-outfielder in 1990, and he responded by hitting .350 with four home runs in his first 20 games. Azocar struggled with patience at the plate, however, needing 130 plate appearances before drawing his first walk.

After Azocar's rookie season, the Yankees sent him to the Padres, with whom he spent two more years. In all, Azocar hit .226 with five homers and 36 RBIs in the Majors.

Azocar finished his career in the Mexican League, with his last season coming in 2001. He was honored in February during the Caribbean Series, held in Venezuela, with his induction into the Caribbean region's baseball Hall of Fame.

Washington(CNN) -- West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, the self-educated son of a coal miner who became the longest-serving member of Congress, died early Monday at age 92, the senator's office said.
Byrd, a nine-term Democrat, was known as a master of the chamber's often-arcane rules and as the self-proclaimed "champion of the Constitution," a jealous guardian of congressional power.
His speeches were laced with references to poetry and the Greek and Roman classics, often punctuated by the brandishing of his pocket copy of the national charter.
He was also known as the "King of Pork," using top positions on the Senate Appropriations Committee to steer federal spending to his home state -- one of the nation's poorest.
Byrd relished the title.

Briscoe, 87, was governor between 1973-79, according to the Texas library archives. Briscoe became governor after promising to clean up a scandal-tainted state government, the library said on its website.

Gov. Rick Perry said Briscoe was a mentor and a leader who put the state's needs first.

"He understood the importance of limited government and low taxes as a way to guard individual liberty and encourage the economic growth that creates jobs for families," Perry said in a statement.

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees say longtime public address announcer Bob Sheppard has died. He was believed to be 99.
His death was confirmed to The Associated Press on Sunday by team spokesman Jason Zillo. Zillo didn't immediately have additional details, but said the team would release them later in the day.
Sheppard started with the Yankees in 1951. His impeccable introductions of stars from Joe DiMaggio to Derek Jeter earned him the nickname "The Voice of God."
Sheppard last worked at Yankee stadium late in the 2007 season, when he became ill with a bronchial infection. He recorded a greeting to fans that was played at the original ballpark's final game in September 2008. His audio recording still is used to introduce Jeter before each at-bat at home by the Yankees captain.

George Steinbrenner Dies of Massive Heart Attack: AP

Yankees owner George Steinbrenner died this morning after suffering a massive heart attack, the Associated Press reports.

Steinbrenner celebrated his 80th birthday on July 4.

Steinbrenner's micromanaging on the field and penchant for pursuing high-priced free agents -- and later taking a key role in escalating their salaries -- earned him a reputation as one of the most controversial figures in sports.

During Steinbrenner's 37-year ownership of the club, the longest tenure in Bronx Bombers' history, the Yankees won 7 World Series titles and 11 penants.

how about some George Steinbrenner quotes? (from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/g/georgestei226938.html )

Remember when Fay Vincent tried to give him a lifetime ban from baseball?

"People keep coming up to me and asking, 'How does it feel to be banned for life?' Banned for life. I wasn't banned for life. There was never a word of suspension, probation or ban in that agreement. It was never meant to be part of it." George Steinbrenner

Well, if there was a lifetime ban, consider it lifted, Boss.

I am tough. Sometimes I'm unreasonable. I have to catch myself every once in a while. George Steinbrenner

Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next. George Steinbrenner

Owning the Yankees is like owning the Mona Lisa. George Steinbrenner

(You've gotta love that one!)

but here is the spooky one . . .

I will never have a heart attack. I give them. George Steinbrenner

NEW YORK — Bobby Thomson, who hit the famed “Shot Heard ’Round the World” that won the 1951 National League pennant for the New York Giants, has died. He was 86.

Thomson’s death was confirmed today by the funeral home in Savannah, Ga., that is handling the arrangements. He had been in failing health for several years and died at home nearby Monday night, funeral director Joe Wall said.

Thomson connected off Brooklyn ace Ralph Branca for a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning at the Polo Grounds in the decisive game of a best-of-three playoff.

The homer and broadcaster Russ Hodges’ ecstatic call of “The Giants win the pennant!” remain one of the signature moments in major-league history.

A three-time All-Star as an infielder and outfielder, Thomson hit .270 with 264 career home runs and 1,026 RBI from 1946-60 with several teams.

Lynyrd Skynyrd inspiration dies in north Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Leonard Skinner, the basketball coach and gym teacher who inspired the name of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died in Florida. He was 77.

Skinner's daughter, Susie Moore, says Skinner died in his sleep early Monday at the St. Catherine Laboure Manor in Jacksonville, where he had been living for about a year. He had Alzheimer's disease.

Skinner was working at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville in the late 1960s when he sent a group of students to the principal's office because their hair was too long. Those students later formed a band, using a variation of Skinner's name for their own.

Skinner later allowed the band to use a photo of his Leonard Skinner Realty sign for the inside of their third album.

____

You just know those hippie boys hated that gym teacher . . . enough that they took his name, changed it up a bit and made it the name of their band . . . their way of sticking it to the man.

And "the man" took it in stride and outlived most of the band members. :shrug

RIP, Mr. Skinner

Benoit Mandelbrot, a well-known mathematician who was largely responsible for developing the field of fractal geometry and who once worked as an IBM researcher in Yorktown, died Thursday. He was 85 and lived in Cambridge, Mass.

The cause, his wife, Aliette said, was pancreatic cancer.

The Polish-born French mathematician founded the field of fractal geometry about four decades ago, the first broad attempt to quantitatively investigate the notion of roughness.

Fractals are widely used. Fractal equations help Hollywood computer artists create more realistic landscapes, and doctors measure irregularly shaped red blood cells to develop better medication.

He received the Japan Prize in 2003, a prestigious award that is described as being second only to the Nobel Prize. It's awarded annually by the Science and Technology Foundation of Japan to scientists whose work has "advanced the frontiers of knowledge and served the cause of peace and prosperity for mankind."

Mandelbrot shaped many of his theories during his time at IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown. Later, he became Sterling Professor Emeritus of Mathematical Sciences at Yale University.

He was born in Warsaw and immigrated to France with his family in 1936 to escape the German threat. They settled in Lyon, where they endured World War II.

He is survived by his wife, two sons and three grandchildren.

NY Daily News...

Since 1988, Freddy Schuman, better known as Freddy Sez to Yankee fans, has traipsed around Yankee Stadium with his homemade signs urging on the Yanks to win. The familiar ping of a spoon hitting his pan fills the air, and as it grows louder, fans know that their chance to bang the pan is just around the corner.
Unfortunately, though, Freddy has made his last sign. The Daily News is reporting that Freddy has passed away at the age of 82. Chuck Frantz, Schuman’s long-time friend, has conveyed the bad news to the paper. There is no cause of death.
Through thick and thin, Freddy came to the Yankee games at the old stadium in the Bronx. He would shuffle around the ballpark, and fans would stop to take pictures with Freddy. His pan and spoon are now in Cooperstown. “This is what keeps me going,” he said to Times reporter Manny Fernandez back in 2006. “This is why I’m doing it. Probably if I stopped, I’d probably be buried already.”
The 2006 piece is chock full of stories about Freddy. The Upper West Sider lost his eye in a stickball accident at age 9 and his teeth because he owned a candy store. The constant banging he endured as the holder of the pan left him hard of hearing, but he did it for love of the game. The Yanks even flew him out to Arizona for Game 7 of the 2001 World Series to serve as the team’s good luck charm. “If Freddy isn’t there with his pan,” Rudy Giuiliani once said, “it doesn’t feel right. It feels like there’s something missing.”
When the new stadium opened, Freddy at first had a tough time getting in, but the Yankees eventually found tickets for him. He hadn’t been as loud a presence at the new stadium, and his health, never strong in the first place, seemed to be failing him lately. He was 82 at the time of the his death.

Actor who played Tarzan's Boy dies at 79 in Calif.

HULA VISTA, Calif. — Johnny Sheffield, who played the character Boy in the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and '40s, has died at age 79.

His wife, Patty Sheffield, told the Los Angeles Times that he died Friday of a heart attack at his home in the San Diego suburb of Chula Vista. She says he fell off a ladder while pruning a palm tree four hours earlier.

Johnny Sheffield beat out more than 300 other youngsters for the role of Boy in the 1939 movie "Tarzan Finds a Son!" and went on to co-star with Johnny Wiessmuller in seven more Tarzan films.

He later played another jungle boy, Bomba, in a dozen movies but quit the business after the last one 1955.

Johnny Sheffield went on to earn a business degree and worked for various companies and in contracting and real estate.

CARMEL, Calif. — Pioneering TV cartoon artist Alexander Anderson Jr., who created Rocky the flying squirrel and Bullwinkle the moose, has died. He was 90.

Anderson's son Terry tells the Los Angeles Times his father died at a Carmel nursing home on Friday after battling Alzheimer's disease. The elder Anderson was a longtime resident of Pebble Beach.

Anderson teamed up with his childhood friend and former University of California, Berkeley, fraternity brother Jay Ward to make low-budget TV cartoons.

Their creations also included Crusader Rabbit and his pal Rags the Tiger and Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties.

The syndicated "Crusader Rabbit" became the first animated TV series in the 1950s. "Rocky and His Friends" debuted in 1959 on ABC.

LOS ANGELES — Stage and screen actor James MacArthur, who played "Danno" in the original version of television's "Hawaii Five-0," died Thursday at age 72. MacArthur's agent, Richard Lewis, said the actor died in Florida of "natural causes," but no direct cause was specified.

MacArthur, born Dec. 8, 1937, seemed destined to become an actor.

He was the adopted son of Nyack playwright Charles MacArthur and Helen Hayes, an award-winning actress often referred to as "First Lady of the American Theatre." Silent film star Lillian Gish was his godmother.

In a career that spanned more than four decades, MacArthur was most recognized for his role as Detective Danny "Danno" Williams on "Hawaii Five-0," which aired from 1968 to 1980. Episodes often ended with detective Steve McGarret, the lead character, uttering what became a pop culture catch phrase: "Book 'em, Danno."

Jack Lord, who starred as McGarret, died in 1998.

MacArthur quit the role of McGarret's sidekick a year before the program's final season.

"Quite frankly, I grew bored," he explained on his website. "The stories became more bland and predictable and presented less and less challenge to me as an actor."

Officer and a Gentleman' Costar Lisa Blount's Death

Lisa Blount and David Keith in 'An Officer and a Gentleman'
Paramount Pictures Actor and filmmaker Lisa Blount was found dead in her home in Little Rock, Arkansas. She was 53. The star's death spurred Yahoo! searches on "lisa blount" to rise an amazing 12,325% in just one day. Fans also looked up "lisa blount actress," "lisa blount biography," and "lisa blount death."

The stunning beauty first came on the scene with her breakout role in "An Officer and a Gentleman," playing Debra Winger's friend and David Keith's fiancée Lynette Pomeroy. The performance led to a Golden Globe nomination.

Interest in the 1982 movie led to the actor being voted "Favorite Female Newcomer" in 1983 by an US magazine readers' poll.

Before that big break, the Arkansas native got her start in movies soon after enrolling at the University of Arkansas. The budding collegiate was cast by director James Bridges in the movie "September 30, 1955."

Blount's other credits include "Prince of Darkness," "Great Balls of Fire!," and "Chrystal," starring alongside Billy Bob Thornton. The actor was also known as a "scream queen," thanks to starring in a few horror flicks in the '80s.

Lisa Blount in March, 2010
Amy Graves/Wireimage.com The multitalented Blount eventually moved from acting to filmmaking. She won an Oscar in 2001 for producing the live-action short "The Accountant," directed and acted by her husband, Ray McKinnon. The filmmaker most recently filmed the pilot for FX's "Outlaw Country."

In 2005, Blount and McKinnon moved from Los Angeles to Little Rock, Arkansas.

While her cause of death has not been reported, Blount's mother said she suffered from a condition similar to multiple sclerosis and had been complaining of back and neck pain. Police have ruled out foul play.

Fount Ray Armstrong, Jr. February 21, 1939 - November 2, 2010

Fount Ray Armstrong was the son of a Mississippi delta farmer and after attending classes at Mississippi State University in the late 50s to early 60s, followed his father into farming the family owned land. Here he is pictured with his father Fount Ray Armstrong and mother in the family farm homestead, late 60s:

He married Carolyn Buckels (my aunt) and they raised a family of two daughters and a son. Here he is pictured on a family vacation in the Rocky Mountains with his two daughters, prior to the birth of his son:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs141.snc4/36400_1399401078312_1630840436_994405_1920158_n.jp g

He was a talented musician and recorded an LP of gospel songs in the late 60s. He is on the far right:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs121.snc4/36400_1399141711828_1630840436_993686_463699_n.jpg

When I was a child, he was the most interesting uncle in the family. He built a tornado cellar outside his home where we pretended we were the 6 million dollar man, escaping from Soviet bunkers. He told stories of his business development trips to Guatemala and he pretended to keep a little friend inside the round can of Skoal that occupied his front shirt pocket. He would wrestle and pillow fight with his children and nephews, with "SKEETER TIME" the battle cry that would set off the battle royale.

He battled weight gain in his forties and fifties and almost died after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. Following a lengthy recovery, he eventually regained all the weight he'd lost and then some.

He was also a talented barbeque chef and many enjoyed his cooking. As the years wore on, he lost interest in farming, sold what remained of his family farm land and opened a restaurant. In the early 80s, he won a contest sponsored by the Memphis in May Barbeque competition to serve as its spokesman, Mister Bob. E. Que. Among the perks of that job, he was awarded all the Budweiser beer he could request for a 12 month period of time.

Upon reaching middle age, he experienced a mid-life crisis and divorced his wife of 30 years, moved from Mississippi to Arkansas, and married his Arkansan cousin to whom he remained married until the date of his death. :lookaroun

He outlived his oldest daughter, who died a premature death due to lung cancer.

In later life, he was a beloved grandfather to his grandchildren.

In late October of 2010, he fell from a short ladder while changing a light bulb, injuring his arm. Upon being treated at the local hospital in Pensacola, Florida, he was advised a CT scan showed a mass in his brain. He was reluctant to undergo surgery to remove the mass, but consented to the surgery. He never woke up from the surgery, and died on November 2, 2010, following withdrawal of artificial life support.

Rest in peace, Fount Ray Armstrong, Jr.

An attorney for Jerry Bock says the Tony Award-winning composer of such hit Broadway musicals as "Fiddler on the Roof" and "Fiorello!" has died.
Richard M. Ticktin said Bock died Wednesday morning at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco of heart failure. He was 81.
Together with lyricist Sheldon Harnick, Bock wrote the powerful score to "Fiddler on the Roof," one of the most successful productions in the history of the American musical theater. It earned the two men Tonys in 1965.
Bock and Harnick also took home Tonys for the music and lyrics to "Fiorello!" in 1960. In addition, Bock was nominated for Tonys in 1967 for "The Apple Tree" and in 1971 for "The Rothschilds."

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio zoo says the longest snake living in captivity has died.

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium says workers found the 24-foot python Wednesday morning dead from an apparent tumor.

The snake was named Fluffy. It held the Guinness World Record as the longest snake living in captivity. It was about as long as a moving van and as thick as a telephone pole. It weighed 300 pounds.

The 18-year-old reticulated python had drawn large crowds since the zoo got it in 2007.

Reticulated pythons are named for the cross-hatching patterns on their skin and average 10 to 20 feet long. The largest recorded one was 32 feet, 9 1/2 inches long when it was killed in 1912 in Indonesia.
