The problem is the movie industry isn't using the technolog for it's purpose. Now Avatar did it right buy using the special camera. It's become a way to increase ticket price. This will back fire to consumer, which is why I sold all my IMAX stock.

I have seen a number of 3D movies and the only one that made me glad to have paid the extra was Avatar.
No way I would buy a 3D TV. :no
But at Disney (and Universal) - I enjoy the 4D shows. PhilharMagic is one of my favorite things to do at the Magic Kingdom. Tough to be a Bug at Animal Kingdom, Shrek at Universal. I liked them all.
There was one 3D movie I was watching earlier this year - maybe Thor? - I got to the point where I just took off the glasses and watched the fuzzy film rather than keep the glasses on for 2 plus hours. :shrug When we saw the Harry Potter movie and didn't pay extra for the 3D, it was pretty obvious in parts where they had 3D gimmicks. :rollseyes

Since people on these forums don't know much about Disney World :lookaroun , I present "ten things not to do at Disney World:"
http://www.concierge.com/ideas/hotspots/tours/502223?mbid=con_ob_cpc_a
:lol
Got me to thinking, we could probably come up with our own list:
Keeping it as basic as possible, here is my list:
10. Don't wear high heels, ladies
9. Don't leave for the day just because of an afternoon rain shower
8. Don't pass up all the beer and liquor stores on your way to your on-property hotel. :lookaroun
7. Don't wait to buy your park passes at the park entrance
6. Don't yank on Tigger's zipper.

1. Don't worry so much about shit. Just relax and have fun. If you realize, after the fact, that you could have saved 10 minutes in wait time by riding Soaring before Test-track, don't spend the rest of the day being pissed off about it.

5. Don't be shy to ask photopass photographers to take a photo with your camera after they take their professional photo.

3. Don't throw away your fast pass if you are stuck in line for a ride or eating a meal and can't get back during the one hour window. it will still be honored.

Anybody hear anything about this? Which parking lot has construction going on around it?
Update...
ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A woman's body was found on Walt Disney World property , Orange County deputies said.
A security guard called 911 early Tuesday morning to report finding
the body. The unidentified woman's body was found inside a car in an employee parking lot on East Buena Vista Drive.
Deputies said foul play does not appear to be involved.
Deputies said the parking lot where the body was found is near a
construction site and several buildings. It is in an area of the
property not directly connected to the theme parks or hotels.

Regarding the list, let's see:
I usually stay at Disney Hotels
I get tickets for more days than I need
I use Disney transportation (though I sometimes use a rental car)
I do use fastpass
For the past several trips I have just done Disney
I've pretty much dined exclusively at Disney
I do skip a lot of rides
I don't succumb to squabbling
I don't go during school holidays (now that I have a choice)
I don't over-do it
So I do just about half of what they suggest.
I think we should write our own blog. If we all took turns, I'll bet we could come up with some good advice for Disney travellers.:lookaroun

Stay behind the yellow lines, and keep your KIDS behind them, too. They're there for a reason, folks, and that nice Disney CM will have fewer panic attacks when your two-year-old isn't in the path of an oncoming Snow White ride vehicle. :rotfl
Food's expensive at WDW - get over it.
Avoid run-ins with Flower and Garden Festival vendors.
Extra Magic Hours are only worth attending if you're actually having FUN!

Dumbo can be terrifying. :lol Not for the adult, but for the parent. Your tot is spinning around with you, no seatbelt and only a flimsy looking chain (not a door) possibly keeping your baby from flying out the opening where you load and unload.

If someone could figure out how to do it, we should creat a checklist of rides and attractions so we can figure out what we have and haven't done. One year I tried to hit a bunch of things I hadn't done, but it seemed like most of them were closed for maintenence or there were other reasons I didn't go.

When you hit that little level section and then drop again, the drop is so quick that you can feel yourself floating out of your seat. OK, stay with me on this one:
King Ozymandias of Assyria was running low on cash after years of war with the Hittites. His last great possession was the Star of the Euphrates , the most valuable diamond in the ancient world. Desperate, he went to Croesus, the pawnbroker, to ask for a loan. Croesus said, "I'll give you 100,000 dinars for it." "But I paid a million dinars for it," the King protested. "Don't you know who I am? I am the king!" Croesus replied, "When you wish to pawn a Star, makes no difference who you are!"

If you tried to collect every pin, you'd go broke and still not have them all, but I see Disney is doing zodiac pins this year:
http://parksandresorts.wdpromedia.com/media/disneyparks/blog/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/hmp110210SMALL.jpg
I don't recognize the centaur for Sagittarius but for the hunter, wouldn't Gaston have been the natural choice? Maybe they don't want to focus on bad guys. I would have liked Disney to have selected Ferdinand the Bull (silly symphony) for Taurus, and these other changes:
Ariel for Aquarius
Snow White for Virgo :lookaroun
Flounder for Pisces (only because it looks like no Pixar characters are being used - otherwise Nemo for Pisces)
I guess the rest are okay, huh? Pluto as a ram? :confused Merlin the goat from Sword in the Stone would have been good for Capricorn, but I like Phil, too.
Oh well, this is just for discussion. It isn't like I'm going out to buy any pins. :lol

My recollection is the first phase to open will be the Circus Area, and that is scheduled for early March. It will include the train station, the mini-roller coaster formerly known as Goofy's Barnstormer and the new dual-Dumbos. It might also contain the two big tents.
As for when the rest of it is open, I don't know the official dates but expect the Little Mermaid to be open by December and possibly the Beauty and the Beast section. Snow White's roller coaster won't be open until sometime in 2013 or even 2014.

Did anyone see the news that they are going to start strictly enforcing the FastPass times? Has something to do with a more sophisticated system coming out about it. There will be a 5 minute early arrival window and then a 15 late arrival window, so if your pass if from 1:00-2:00, you can arrive as early as 12:55 and then it's no good after 2:15. That completely changes the way our family would use the system--and many others.

I did see that. There seems to be some speculation that Disney will soon start selling "come when you want without standing in line" passes, but I haven't seen any confirmation of that.
We never knew you could come back anytime until I read about it at the wdwmagic forums. I remember one meal in particular at the Disney MGM Studios where we didn't get finished before the return time for Rock n Roller Coaster on our Fastpass and we just didn't go back. If only we had known!
I don't know what to think. I have not ever seen abnormally large numbers of people cashing in late fastpasses causing problems with standby lines, but don't really know if that is an issue or not.
The one thing everyone in the discussion seemed to agree upon is that this new move will somehow result in Disney making more money. $$$ :lol

Disney didn't advertise it, but in general, you could come back after your FastPass time. Hey, things happen, especially when you're traveling with kids, or a large group - Disney understand (or should I say underSTOOD) that. The only ride you couldn't do that on was Soarin'.

Just saw the discussion about FP changes from...almost two months ago. :lookaroun If they are enforcing both ends of the window now, I'd bet dollars to donuts (what does that phrase even MEAN anyway?) that it's because too many fansites have let too many people in on the "little secret" to the point where everybody was coming back "late." It's one of those things that they could probably afford to be lenient on, as long as only a relative handful of people were doing it.

the rule change is a precursor to a much more dramatic change, a FastPass replacement (?) called xPass, which allows visitors to reserve their ride-times far in advance, over the Web, simultaneous with their other bookings -- dining, hotel, etc. This feels like it would suck a lot of spontaneity out of Disney World visits, though for certain very slow-loading/long-queueing rides, it would be nice to guarantee a ride in advance.
Just over a year ago, in February 2011 at a Disney investors conference, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chairman Tom Staggs confirmed Disney is working on a system from which those planning a trip to Walt Disney World will be able to make ride reservations from outside the parks, even from home before the trip begins.
Staggs said, “…we are currently developing an innovative system that will, in essence, create a version of FASTPASS for their entire Disney vacations. Now we define the guest experience as beginning from the time a potential guest sits down at a computer or picks up a phone to make a reservation. [...] They’ll be able to create a personalized itinerary that gives them the exact Disney vacation they want.”
Though that revelation was met with mixed reactions from Disney theme park fans, it’s likely that the new FASTPASS rule enforcement is directly related to the yet-to-be-revealed ride reservation system, rumored to be dubbed “X-Pass” or “xPass” (or a variety of other names). With Disney planning to add a more advanced ride reservation ability, the current FASTPASS system must be completely under their control, knowing exactly when and how many guests will be returning, expecting to “skip” the line.
The change is likely to cause some frustration among those who have grown used to the convenience of using a FASTPASS any time later in the day, but ultimately just as FASTPASS was a revolutionary addition to the parks in the late ’90s, the new “xPass” system (or whatever it might be called) is being designed to revolutionize, enhance, and minimize the act of mindlessly waiting in line, allowing for more entertainment and enjoyment out of a Disney theme park visit.I'm not so sure if I will like this. Almost seems like over-planning to me for a trip. And, I read someplace else that it will only be available to resort guests.

Yech. I'm not a fan at all. I never liked fast pass for the same 'over-planning' issue you mention, Scott. I like to just go and ride what I feel like riding when I feel like riding it.
I've used Fast-Pass for the busy rides because it just seems like I have to and I'd be a fool to not take advantage, but I'd be happy if they did away with the whole system . . . and just worked on reducing wait times with efficiency rather than gimmicks.
If they install that proposed system, I think it's going to reduce my enjoyment of the parks. I'm either going to feel obligated to use it - and have my schedule dictated by my X-Pass times, or ignore it and feel like a chump. Either way, I won't enjoy going to the parks the way I once did.

I like pulling a fast pass for Splash Mountain on a 90+ degree day with a 75 minute wait, or for Soarin' with a 2 hour wait. They can really enhance the park experience, to my way of thinking.

I agree with Gary. If they install this new system, I think it's going to be a pain whether I use it or ignore it.
Doug, you mentioned Soarin' as an example. In my experience, the only way you get a FP for a ride that backs up like that one is to get there early in the morning or, if you try for one later, you have to wait several hours for your window. Do you tend to spend all (or most) of the day in one park? Because that seems like what you would have to do, unless you deliberately made Epcot your first stop. Probably one of the reasons I rarely get on super popular rides is I hate to feel constrained to one park, and I *really* hate to plan.

Well, I think we can all agree what the solution is. Disney clearly needs to build two of every park, one with FP for the planners, and one without for the rest of us. They've got enough unused real estate in FL to make this happen, I would think. Who's up for a letter-writing campaign?

Exactly.
Here. I've spent quite a while getting the wording just right (I am a professional author after all), so I think it's just about perfect. But please feel free to add your (non-professional author :lookaroun) opinions, or you can just sign as is:
Mr. Iger,
We have recently become aware of potential plans to replace your lame "Fast-Pass" system with a lame times infinity "X-Pass" system.
In response to this, we, the undersigned, kindly request that you eat shit and die.
Sincerely,
Gary Hoover

Very nice! :rotfl
BJ - I have two different approaches to visiting a Disney park. One is "let's try and maximize our ride experiences" and when we are in that mode, we get to the park early and spend most of the day there. We don't usually park hop, although we may take a break during the day and then return. That approach works well with the Soarin' and Toy Story Midway Mania fastpasses which are snatched early and involve a return several hours later.
Our other approach is the more casual approach, consistent with coming down for a race or business in Orlando, and that is "I'm here for another reason and am going to enjoy the parks for whatever comes our way while we are here." That tends to be more enjoying the streetmosphere and the food booths and maybe doing a couple of rides and watching a fireworks show and/or a parade. When we are in that mode, we don't care so much about fastpasses, but by the same token, we aren't going to wait over an hour for any attraction - we will just find something else with a shorter line. Gosh, I even saw the Hall of Presidents under this approach once and liked it! :lol
I think both methods have their positives, but at this point in my life, I'm not really going Theme Park Commando unless there is a new attraction with a big line that I want to see such as Toy Story Midway Mania back in 2009 or Everest back in 2006 (or Harry Potter in 2010 :lookaroun ). I guess new Fantasyland with its Little Mermaid and 7 Dwarfs Mine Train roller coaster might provoke that type of response when we go back in 2013 or 2014, maybe. Who knows, I could be a grandfather by then. :shrug

I am at the point where I like to just go to which ever park I'd like to go to, when I want to. If I have dining reservations, I just make sure I'm at that park in time. I'm not sure I'd like every moment planned out in advance. I'd feel I have to do it though, just so I'd get to do things (since everyone else would be doing it as well). I wonder what they are going to charge for it (if anything). I've read it would be free for Deluxe resort guests, but I think everything is just rumor at this point. :dunno

I just see this as another complicated solution to a simple problem.
For example, we all know that to lose weight we should eat less and exercise more. . . but there are no end of complicated diets and plans that complicate that simple idea.
We all know that to be financially comfortable we should spend less and save more . . . but there are all kinds of scams and schemes designed to try to get rich quick.
The solution to the problem of long lines is to: Design rides and lines to move the expected crowds through as efficiently as possible and build enough rides to spread the crowds around.
This just seems like a complicated scheme to avoid addressing the real problem as directly as possible.

:lol We don't "do" much while we're there anymore. I guess, for us, it's one of those things where, we've been there 235919857309 times, and we know we'll be back, so nobody kills themselves to try to fit it all in. I could be content just wandering around and hanging out... probably most people wouldn't be too keen on spending $85 a day to do that though :lookaroun :lol Mostly we just try to fit in what the kids want to do, but even they are like "Meh, whatever... we'll do it next time" :rotfl

Certain rides (Peter Pan especially) are just slow-moving, and stop a lot. If a slow-moving ride that stops a lot happens to be HUGELY popular as well, it generates LOOOOOOONG wait times that Disney can't seem to figure out how to avoid. Peter Pan has a lot of stops because of the belts on the entrance and exit - if people don't watch their step and hustle, they don't make it on or off the ride vehicle fast enough, and then the cast member responsible for watching for that HAS to stop it. Fastpass just made it worse, because angry guests who wait in line for hours (sometimes literally) become infuriated when they see fastpass holders stroll right to the front of the line.

Sing it, sister. There is a spot in that line configuration where the standby line comes face to face with the fastpass line, with only an unarmed cast member between them. (I worked that position PLENTY.) Angry parents and hot tired toddlers make for some ugly confrontations, let me tell you. :lookaroun

As far as the xPass, my sister and I kinda love it. For as many times a year that we go, we never get to ride Toy Story because FP's are always gone and the shortest wait we've ever had is 30 minutes...usually it's 60-70. With this, we can do TSM, Soarin', and perhaps Splash and Space Mountain

If the crowd response and queuing mechanics are the same for Mermaid at both resorts, you should have no trouble getting on. It was a walk-on when I was at DCA last fall...which surprised me, with it being so new. I couldn't tell if it was because the cycling rate is super high, or West Coast locals were not that excited for it (seems unlikely, since ANYTHING new is usually mobbed for a while).

The queue is very engrossing too, at least the indoor part. Waiting in line is almost an attraction itself once you get inside Hogwarts. I rode it with Rain and Marcia a year ago, and talked them into just hanging out in the queue with me after we rode the first time, to see everything we missed earlier.
