Discussion thread for all things Disney. Parks, movies, merchandise, if it's by the Mouse, let's discuss it.

I'd really like to go back to Disneyland later this year, but part of me wonders if I should hold off until the DCA expansion is finished. That's not going to be until about 2013, I think. I don't really plan on waiting that long, but part of me thinks it would be cool to go back and see the park completely different than it was last summer.

Cool! :punk

Sara and Jason just spent a week in Hong Kong on vacation, and they went to Disneyland while they were there. VERY, VERY different. Way smaller than the Magic Kingdom, for one thing, and very uncrowded. Nowhere near as many rides; the only ride that was better than than its cousin in Orlando was Space Mountain, although they also liked Hong Kong's Small World. They both noticed that the Cast Members, while very nice, had a terrible time controlling the lines and crowds at the parades - even when the place was mostly empty! They enjoyed their day there, but had no desire to return for a second day. :dunno

Their version of the Magic Kingdom park is okay. I like certain parts rather than the whole sum. However, Tokyo DisneySea is a different matter. Best park, hands down. But it's a very different kind of Disney park. I think its closest American cousin in terms of unique theming would be AK.

Sara and Jason have now been to WDW, Disneyland in Anaheim, Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disneyland (they liked that a LOT better than Hong Kong), and Disneyland Paris. Lucky them! :lol

Although I'd rather stay home and babysit Katie for a week than take a 17-month old to Hong Kong :lol...toooooo long a flight.

Just and FYI, since everyone here is used to the old policy. Disney has changed their cancellation policy for 2010 MYW packages by one day. It's now 44 - 7 days prior - $100 cancellation fee and for 6 - arrival date - $200 cancellation fee.

First I'd tackle him in a HUGE bear hug.

Then we'd sneak into Club 33 for lunch.

I am seriously beyond excited about the Main Street Electrical parade coming back. And the new fireworks. And a new drop sequence on Tower. I ride Tower over and over again until I get all the sequences in.

I like them both, so am happy the Main Street Electrical Parade is coming back, but would be disappointed if Spectromagic was scrapped. I like the Fantasia floats in Spectromagic and Ursula in the Little Mermaid section of the parade, among other things.

Main Street Electrical Parade is full of characters you wouldn't otherwise see such as Pete's Dragon, the Bed knobs and Broomsticks Lion King (I can't ever remember his name) and the Alice in Wonderland trippy caterpillar float . . . it is all so cool. :D

I answered a question in a wdwmagic thread about "What rides would you change?" and suggested some changes in Adventureland. My post was ignored, which is fine, but I am curious what you all think about what I shared that I would like to see, if they decided to change things up.

Good, bad or ugly, I'd like to hear your thoughts:

Swiss Family Treehouse - make it a load area, with ziplines going across the Jungle Cruise River and back. That necessarily means seeing people coming and going while on Jungle Cruise.

Jungle Cruise: Re-do the boats so that it is more adventurous. Instead of going behind the waterfall, go OVER the waterfall! (yee-ha!) I suppose that means boats with lap belts. You'd still have a skipper, but he'd be strapped in and delivering his spiel via a headset microphone.

Tiki Birds: Replace with live South Pacific entertainment. This would steal from the Polynesian luau, and would include dancing, fire swallowing, pretty much anything involving drums and/or a grass skirt.

Those changes, or any of them, would get me back to Adventureland. As-is, I am all about grabbing a Dole Whip and heading to Caribbean Plaza.

but tell me, how far off base am I here?

Hooker

Other than PotC, implode the entire land. I wouldn't miss anything in there. Something should be done because those attractions seem, to me, to be outdated, stale, and boring.

Then, put in the Indiana Jones attraction that is in Disneyland.

NO, I'll go along with you on all of those. :rotfl (Except maybe the Swiss Family Treehouse, 'cause I kind of like that one the way it is.) I had heard that one reason for keeping Aladdin is that one of the "cars" is wheel-chair accessible, where Dumbo does not. :dunno

You're right. From www.themouseonwheels.com:

Dumbo This is one of the icon rides at the park. I swear, every Disney commercial has smiling children riding the elephant in it! Then why is there NOT a roll on vehicle like there is on Aladdin?? The wheelchair entrance is next to the regular entrance. Get one of the cast members attention and be prepared to wait your turn as if you were in the main stream queue. For the non-accessible cars you have to step up 12 inches then over 12 inches through the opening about 18 inches to a bench seat.

Magic Carpets of Aladdin "Dumbo done Agrabah style " as you roll aboard a special magic carpet for a 2 minute ride. There is one car that is accessible for regular sized wheelchairs. If yours is bigger, you can transfer to a manual one at the attraction. The back seat of this carpet is unlocked and rolled out. There is then room for the ramp and for the wheelchair to be placed where the seat was removed. The front seat of the carpet remains for a companion to sit in to ride. Non-accessible carpets require a transfer up about 12-15 inches and through an opening to a bench seat. The device that secures the wheelchair goes between the front and back wheels and is about 6 inches tall. Batteries may get in the way.

Back from my trip. EXHAUSTED!! Endless walking and standing. Whose bright idea was it to go on a three day holiday? Four if you count Friday. I didn't even get to ride Pirates. Decided I will NEVER ride Space Mountain again. I got really sick this time and luckily didn't upchuck all over the place. Definitely not as fun accompanying a 13 year old girl who didn't want to ride the "baby" rides. So Toad and Peter Pan were out. No go for Alice either. But I'll be back in May for a court reporter convention and I'll get my rides in then.

But I'll be back in May for a court reporter convention and I'll get my rides in then.

Boo! :mad There is no such thing! All rides are equally glorious!! :yes

Back from my trip. EXHAUSTED!! Endless walking and standing. Whose bright idea was it to go on a three day holiday? Four if you count Friday. I didn't even get to ride Pirates. Which is probably why God hasn't given me kids. LOL

Well, it would have been one thing if it were my niece. I wouldn't have cared what she thought and I would have dragged her on the "baby rides." I wanted her to come along to accompany my judge's 13 year old, but she couldn't make it. Judge's foot and hip were acting up from all the walking so I basically got the kid for the weekend. Which I didn't really mind. I just escorted her from ride to ride and let her go crazy in the single rider lines. She rode Screamin' eight times in a row yesterday. It was all I could do to brow beat her into riding BTMR which is judge's favorite ride. Again, if it were my kid or relative, it would be a different story. But when it's someone else's kid, it's not the same.

Yeah, she's the one adopted from the Russsian orphanage. But yes, a little spoiled to my eyes. But then I wasn't raised on trips to Disneyland every year. So what do I know of spoiled. She's a really good kid with a kind heart. I went to Fastpass Soarin' yesterday and when I caught up with judge I asked where her daughter was. She pointed to a shop and said she was in there. I went in and there she was at the counter buying a Soaring pin with her mom's name on it. Very sweet of her I thought.

I became the "manny" for the weekend and at one point Friday I told judge to just go back to the hotel and relax and watch the Olympics. I think part of the reason why she asked me to go is because she knew she couldn't keep up with Eva and she needed someone to take over. I didn't mind. It is Disneyland afterall. I let her ride whatever she wanted and almost let her eat whatever she wanted. She had a Mickey ice cream for breakfast :lookaroun and this morning I woke her up at 7:00 to hit the parks hard before our flight home. Judge was greatful I took over. With her current physical condition with the bum foot and hip, she couldn't have kept up.

In theory, Tim Burton is perfect for this project. Based on what I've seen in the trailer, I'm not sure, though. I'm not jumping up and down excited over it at this point.

From the little I've seen via the trailers, I can't help but think of American McGee's version of Alice (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_McGee%27s_Alice). In that storyline Alice's parents die in a fire and she has a mental breakdown and is sent to an asylum. She is summoned back to Wonderland by the White Rabbit to help overthrow the Queen of Hearts who has taken control of Wonderland. Yes, it's a much darker version of Alice, but it would appear the part of the storyline in Tim Burton's version where Alice has to overthrow the Red Queen who has taken over Wonderland is almost similar.

Gordon, I've thought there were similarities to American McGee's Alice since I first saw the trailers. With Burton at the helm, it was almost guaranteed to be a darker vision.

Anyway, I recant what I wrote a few days ago about not being excited about the movie after seeing the trailer on this page (tried to embed, no luck): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1252091/Alices-weird-wonderland-Why-scenes-row-Tim-Burtons-fantastical-film-disappear-cinemas-fast-Cheshire-Cat.html

It looks like there might be some real character development to go along with all the snazzy visuals here. And I forgot that it's all in 3-D. I'm looking forward to seeing this. :D

Me, too. Should be fun. Hope it's not TOO dark, though - some whimsy would be welcome, too. I think that's what I hated so much about the Jim Carrey "Christmas Carol" - dark, grim, violent, without a moment's reprieve.

www.AshmanDocumentary.com

A feature-length documentary on the life and work of HOWARD ASHMAN, the critically acclaimed and award winning writer, lyricist, and producer. Ashman wrote LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, SMILE, and the lyrics for Disney’s LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and parts of ALADDIN before dying of complications from AIDS at the age of forty. The film will be an intimate portrait of the man “who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul,” as the dedication to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST puts it. His work continues to capture the imaginations of children and adults the world over, but few people know his life story.

Using raw, verité style, imaginative visuals, incredible musical performances, and high profile interviews, the film will capture the humanity of the person behind the magical work, the true stories behind the fantastical scenes, and the courage of a man who kept writing music despite the ravages of A.I.D.S.

I'm going in May to Anaheim for a court reporter conference I'm supervising and a friend of mine called Disney Dining asking for the Colors of the Wind dining package. I guess she was told July. But I haven't seen anything.

Well, the newly refurbished Space Mountain must have some zip to it. My 10 year old niece rode yesterday and despite having her backpack under her feet, lost it on a curve when her legs went flying up in the air and the backpack went over the side.

She is hoping Disney lost and found will retrieve it for her from the depths of space . . . as she travels home today.

:thumbs The year after the sunglasses incident, Dad left a rosary in his room at POR. He didn't even realize where he'd left it until it arrived in the mail. He wrote a glowing letter of thanks to the resort manager, and got a nice letter in return, thanking him for his thanks. :lol

I guess it depends when Spring Break is and where Easter falls during that time.

Our honeymoon was April 9th - April 23rd, with Easter on the 24th. The first week it was dead, but the second week, we definitely noticed an increase in crowds. That makes sense. 1995 was a late Easter, 16 April 1995.

Agreed. Based on all I've heard, the boy seems to be at fault. And, from the pictures I've seen, the bus was not off the road like the g-ma said. And, Disney is not going to say anything to the family because of legalities so that nothing can be used as an admission of guilt.

But, it's a shame any time someone loses a child.

Greetings from Northern California. What does that have to do with Disney you ask? Well, the Walt Disney Family Museum is located at the Presidio in San Francisco and we spent a couple hours there yesterday. Very cool place for Disney freaks like you and me. Sadly, there is no discount for D23 members.

No photos, as they prohibit photography. :shrug

Quick report - the museum takes you from Walt Disney's early life through his death in 1966. We got to see several of his academy awards, including the special award for Snow White, with the 7 little miniatures. :D Laugh-O-Gram pictures, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, original drawings from Steamboat Willie, Ub Iwerks, Mickey Mouse, the strike, World War II, his personal home out in the valley including his personal railroad train, Disneyland and the projects he was working on at the time of his death. All VERY COOL - for an admission price of $20.

Why San Francisco? That's where his surviving daughter lives and her contributions of the personal effects make the museum worthwhile.

Next time you are at Fisherman's Wharf, take a couple hours to tour the museum - you won't regret it!

At least I've been once in my life. You just went on your first trip to WDW, no? :p

And yeah, making it out to L.A. finally. Decided to actually splurge and do something for myself for once. Aside from DL, I will go watch the Marlins and Dodgers play a game hopefully and wherever else my cousins want to take me :)

Good for you! :yahoo

Woo, Thorpe Park is now on Google Street View! Finally watched the whole World of Colors test video. I'm so THRILLED my favorite Disney character Pocahontas is getting a major part in the show. And her segment looks AWESOME!!

Sara and I watched "The Princess and the Frog" yesterday (finally :blush). Predictable story, and a VERY homogenized soundtrack - nothing sounded authentically jazzy or Cajun or zydeco to me at all. I didn't know who had composed the music, but I said to Sara, "God, this stuff sounds like Randy Newman wrote it" - bingo. :rollseyes Not that he hasn't written some great stuff, but this soundtrack was just too blah for me. :goofy

I sure do miss Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's collaborations. :sadbye

Not that this has to do with anything except you just mentioned his name...

I know (one of) Alan Menkens personal assistant's. Says he's a really cool guy..
I'd like to see Princess and the Frog just because it's the return to cell animation..but it sure was shoved in our faces when we went to WDW in October!

The blog of an urban explorer/trespasser who swam over to Discovery Island and took lots of photos in December... Wow!

There are even preserved dead snakes in Coke bottles on the island! http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_h9fVLeRFnr4/SzWe8eqlccI/AAAAAAAAAUM/zpGHL3qjpE4/s1600/disc9.jpg

We were at River Country the year before it closed, and LOVED it, but we never made it to Discovery Island.

took Katie to Discovery Island on our first trip to WDW, Lenny called it the Disney Death March because it has hot, humid and he had to carry Katie on his shoulders the entire way. I have pictures somewhere.

We did the Wishes cruise once and went over by it, or around it, or something, and the guy told us about the bacteria. Didn't tell us what kind of bacteria, that's scary stuff!

Cool!:thumbs

I just love the creepy coolness of these sort of "forensic Disney Stories".

Remember the photos of the water-park (River-Country?) that was all over grown and being consumed by nature? Or the shots of the partially completed Pop-Century area?

I'm not sure what it is, but there's something really interesting about areas that used to be so Disney turning into something reminiscent of a post-apocalyptic film.

...maybe it's just the idea that not even Disney is more powerful than Mother Nature. :lookaroun :lol

That's absolutely part of the appeal to me! To imagine that the brutal, chaotic dance of nature thrives just a short distance from all of Disney's carefully controlled theme park experiences is fascinating IMO.

Plus...going through an abandoned water park, then swimming to an abandoned island? That's just an awesome story!

The bacteria isn't just in Florida, it's all over the country. The problem comes mainly down South (you too Elizabeth) in that the water gets too warm and since it's basically still the bacteria lays dormant until somebody kicks it up. It's a real killer, even in my inlaws place they tell you to NOT use any ice that comes from ice makers when you have been gone for a long time. You need to clean it out, run two loads of ice to clear out the pipes and then it's safe. Up north many of the lakes and ponds are stream fed so the water moves a lot and stays coldish.

I know many people in WDW say "I'll take the chance", but they don't understand how deadly it can be and that's why I don't understand the swimming races they've held in Bay Lake. :dunno

There are a few threads over on Magic about this as it comes up every so often.

In the Imagination pavilion, replacing Honey, I Shrunk the Audience. Pass the cheese! :lol

Hmmm...I was wondering if that's where they were going to put it. So, will this be with all the bells and whistles or just the bells or no bells or whistles? Like the semi-scaled down version at DL?

I'll probably see it in DL in a couple weeks when I'm there. I just wish that it was the full show with all the effects and not the scaled down version. But I am kinda interested to see what it's all about.
