I was waiting for someone else to do it once registration opened, but it appears we have a bunch of slackers around here.:lookaroun

So who's in and who's thinking about it.

I'm registered for the half.

I'm in, but not officially. I'm gonna do the half again because it looks like Joy is going to do it. We'll probably register in the next week or so.

I'm cheering for you all! :D

Did you see that in honor of the 15th anniversary of the half marathon, they are changing the Donald Duck medal this year? :thumbs

Of course, it figures that after I participated in the Donald Duck for three years in a row, the year I don't run they come out with a new medal. But I only ran the full marathon twice and I have two different Mickey Mouse medals. :D

Which is the same number of Donald Ducks in my greedy little paws - curse being swept in 2010! :mad :lol And 2009 was the first year of the most current version of Donald Duck, which I like much better than its predecessor medal.

Good luck to both of you with your half marathons! I hope you both set personal records in 2011. :king

Well you could always plan to come to Disney World around that time -the weather's great, hotel prices are low and crowds are light - you can meet with us for lunch (whether you run/walk or not).

. . . and if you choose, while your there, to participate in a fun, unique experience, joining literally 10's of thousands of people, on an odyssey from Epcot and Magic Kingdom and back - seeing things you otherwise never get to see while crowds and bands cheer you the whole way. You'll experience the thrill of crossing the start line with fireworks and cheering and characters while it's still dark and the armadillos are still out. . . . well, hey, that's always an option too.:whistle

They admit they don't even know for sure what will be announced, but I did find it interesting the Mrs. Potts clue can refer to the shape of the Disneyland and Cali Adventure parks. "Hidden Mrs. Potts?" :lol I have to say I don't understand why any major races would be targeted to a single sex. I'm sure as hell not going to cross the country to run a "girls' race." :lol

I wasn't clear from the article if they were working off clues or had some inside info. It seems like, from the specifics they listed and the clues they discussed, they either know something . . . or are taking a wild guess. The only thing that seems clear from the clues is that it will be at Disneyland.:shrug

Garyhoov
04-17-2011, 07:42 PM
If you go back and read the article, it seems like this:

"but we can confirm that on Tuesday, April 19 at approximately 10 am ET (7 am PT), Disney will announce the inaugural ‘Tinker Bell Half Marathon’ at the Disneyland Resort.

The runDisney ‘Tinker Bell Half Marathon’ will provide ‘women and girls an opportunity to celebrate health, fitness, active lifestyles’ and will take place at the Disneyland Resort from January 27-29."

. . . comes from a "Pre-Release Announcement" from Disney. I suspect that Disney is getting that statement out there, along with what appears to be an official logo in advance of an official announcement and more details.

This whole thing, from the beginning of the teasing until now, is striking me as a dramatic case of: "Too much sizzle, not enough steak" .

Doug11

I am eagerly awaiting the revelation of the special edition 15th Anniversary Donald Duck medal for the half marathon.

Although I won't be running at Disney this time, I will be with you in training and in spirit - and am planning to run the Mississippi Blues Marathon on Saturday, January 7. It will be celebrating its own milestone - its 5th birthday. :)

This is cool. You input your finishing time for a run and it projects out what you could expect to accomplish in a longer run, taking into account the body's inability to sustain speeds over longer times/distances

http://www.marathonguide.com/fitnesscalcs/predictcalc.cfm

I input my fastest ever 5K finish time of 26:51 and came up with a half marathon time of 2:04:41 (I wish!) and a full marathon time of 4:21:10 (I might kill for a finish that good :lookaroun )

Likewise, I put in my slowest 5K finish time of 31:19 and came up with 2:25:26 and 5:04:37 (much closer to reality, but still giving me the benefit of the doubt! :lol )

Hot off the press, these are the percentages for each run as of 10/25:
GOOFY-93
Full - 82
Half -86
5K - 69
Kids Runs- 66

Weren't these races full by this time last year? Seems like registration is dragging this year.

Maybe the economy is having an effect. It's expensive, committing to a Disney run - flying down there, getting a hotel, renting a car...registration fees are just the tip of the iceberg. :dunno

Sapphire Metropolis Disney Marathon history point:

Marathon running began when one B-rad waited too long to register for the half marathon and registration closed due to capacity . . . in March! So, he decided to train for a full marathon. yeah.

registration dragged last year, too. It was questionable whether the races would sell out, although they were eventually announced as having been full. I'm pretty certain there were less finishers of the full marathon (13,530) in 2011 as compared to 2010. I would say the yearly increase in registration fees combined with the sluggish world wide economy is having an effect, because it is a great race event.

Maybe they will offer a deep "discount" to early birds. I don't know whether we'll do it again in 2013 or not. Joy is doing great training for her walking half, so she may want to give it another go.

Last call for the Goofy Challenge, 2012. It is at 93%, and so based on what they have done in the past, this will be at capacity soon.

But the real reason for this post is this tidbit from the WDW Mouseplanet update: "…The 2012 version of the Expedition Everest Challenge (a 5K event that also involves an obstacle course and scavenger hunt) takes place on May 5, 2012. No registration date has yet been announced."

May 5? The original in 2008 was in late September. They move up the date of this event every year, but I think it is cool that it is still around. It is the only 5K that I know of where you get a shirt, a medal (ultra cool fake copper, fake compass medal!) and a passport as part of the race swag. :thumbs

And May 5? Cinco de Mayo? :king

So, how is that training going for everyone?

My biggest shortfall is that I keep agreeing to run these short 5K races on the weekends when I need to be doing long 12-20 mile runs, but I am feeling good and hitting the track about 3 to 4 nights per week, which is as good as I have ever done.

We're leaving this afternoon for our race weekend. I feel like this is the best I've been trained for a race, but I've also had that nagging feeling all week like I'm coming down with something. So, I hope I stay in good health and make it through and have a good time. I'm going for a personal best on Saturday and then just enjoy the race on Sunday. Joy is predictably anxious and nervous for her first race, but I think she'll do fine. She's trained for a 15 minute mile pace, so I'm excited for her and proud of what she has accomplished.

Bags are packed, one more day of work, and I'll be checking back in on Monday, unless I find some time in the room at Disney.

First chance to post today....and I killed the race today. Sometimes you just know whether you have it or not, and today was one of those days when I knew I was in a zone. My goal was an 11:00 mile, which would've been 10 seconds faster per mile than my best time ever. After mile one, I was at 11:40. I picked up the pace and was at 22:01 after two miles, right on pace. Then, I was 15 seconds ahead, then I was 25 seconds ahead, then 45, and it kept growing. I finished in 2:20:28, over six minutes better than my previous best. It was a perfect day for running--49 degrees and no breeze.

Joy did hers in 3:26:31 and was thrilled with what she did. In all, it was a great day for both of us and we just finished walking through Epcot all day, including a trip to the Boardwalk for dinner.

It was important for me to run and finish this race to let people know I am my same old self. Other than a slower finish time due to training deficiencies, mission accomplished. It was warm out there though. Still, very glad to have run it

I just read at wdwmagic that among rare characters for marathon weekend were the 3 Little Pigs with the Big Bad Wolf. How cool!

Last year you could get a photo with all the fairies (skipped that one :lol ) Princess and the frog characters in 2010 and in 2009 most of the cast of Robin Hood. The characters are always fun.

Yes, the Three Little Pigs were out there now that you mention it. Princess and the Frog characters were at Liberty Square for both races.

Today's race was a day to just cruise and take it easy. It was very tough going out again, especially after I gave Saturday's race so much. First couple of miles I was wondering what the heck I was doing out there! Miles 9-11 were the toughest, but I took a gel and finished ok. Doug, the relay finished in the MK parking lot, right when it came up on the left. I finished the race in 2:47:48, much slower than Saturday, but I really don't care--I got the inaugural medal! I guess I'll take a picture of it and post it on Facebook.

Glad to be home, had a fantastic time, but am I ever sore! BioFreeze is my new best friend.

Bio freeze is awesome. Non-Disney races don't have it on tap so I took some packs in my utility belt. Applied to knees at mile 13 and to hamstrings at mile 18. :)

When you finish your part of the relay, does Disney transport you to the finish?

Speaking of, I recalled the Magic Kingdom came up at mile 10 and you ran through the park for mile 11. How did you gypped out of running through the castle?

We ran through the castle. It's the marathon course exactly, we just veered off at the 13 mile marker.

Cool! I forgot you were doing the relay. (because, you know, it's too difficult to actually read your signature).:blush

How did it work? Was it a true relay with someone else waiting for you to finish so they could go or was it just a combined time thing?

Hooker

It really was a relay. He was there at the finish line, we shook hands, he gave me his silver warming wrap, and off he went. He couldn't leave until I showed up. He and I had a combined time of 6:02:and change. Pfft, I had to carry his sorry behind! :lol At least we didn't have to exchange a baton or anything like that. It was different, but it was still a grueling 13.1 miles. I actually saw him running through the Studios after I had gone back and gotten cleaned up and joined the family.

My official finish time was 5:32:52. I came in 610th place out of 726 full marathon finishers.

While my finish time is nothing to brag about, I am encouraged that it isn't THAT much slower than my previous finish times (5:18) so with some training between now and March, I may yet be able to reach a personal record in Little Rock.

I have until March 7 to decide whether or not to sign up for the Marine Corp Marathon in Washington, D.C. I would love to do this race.

Doug11
01-10-2012, 09:59 AM
My splits show that my pace at 5 miles was 10:48 minutes per mile. At 10 miles, the same. I was easy coasting for those first 10 miles.

At 15 miles, I had slowed to around 11:30 per mile. At 20 miles, I was at 12 minutes per mile for the whole race. Still, 12 minute miles would have allowed a 5:15 finish time. I ended up with a 12:42 minutes per mile finish time. :o

Oh well, there's the room for improvement. Going to do a half marathon in Birmingham next month and try to get in shape to do a full in Little Rock in March.

Hooker

Interesting story - assumes the person doing a first time Disney Race has no gear and is starting from scratch. That said, the article should still be a valuable budgeting tool.

That is intriguing. 10 miles is about the point I run out of gas. It would be interesting to just be finishing at that point - though if I train for ten maybe I'll run out at seven.:lookaroun

I feel the same way about the distance, Gary. With these half marathons and full marathons, I can run 10 miles at a good pace without getting so tired that I want to stop.

If we do this, we would probably look to get into town mid-afternoon to hit up a Friday night Not So Scary Halloween party at the Magic Kingdom, and the Hollywood Studios after party on Saturday. The question is whether we would take Monday off work so as to stick around on Sunday for the Wine and Dine at Epcot. That's always a good time!

After what, four years of running? I have my first casualty. The big toe nail injured in this January's Blues Marathon had turned purple and then all sorts of other colors and even started to separate itself from the nail bed a few weeks ago - but this morning was the final straw. After coming in from a short run last night, I felt some pain down there and when I checked the toenail, it was swinging open like a refrigerator door, but wouldn't unattach itself from the side of my toe. So I did the work for it this morning.

Its gross up under there, too. What was growing underneath reminds me of Voldemort growing on that teacher's head in the first movie of the Harry Potter series. Gross!

I was fine up until the last paragraph.:sick

I'm getting back on the treadmill and getting back into it very slowly.

I tried some New-Balance minimus shoes after talking to a co-worker who is very into the whole barefoot (or nearly so) thing. They didn't work for me, but I think it's because of my pronation. My feet were falling at an awkward angle in them, and I could feel it in my ankles. It made me appreciate how the shape of my standard shoe directs my foot as it comes down.

I had a nice, solid (slow) two mile run on the treadmill today. That may not sound like much, but that's the farthest I've one in a long time. I've been mostly doing bike with very short runs mixed in.

My ankles feel fine (at the moment), so I'm going to see if I can ease back into it and not push too hard. If things work out, maybe I'll think about doing another Disney run . . .

If you want to regret words, I think the following are better ones to regret:

Seriously, sounds like a plan.

I'm toying with the idea of a LONG term plan to run a full marathon - like starting training now to run in 2015.

(talk about words to regret :lookaroun)

One thing that's holding me back (and this is going to sound really stupid) is that I can go 13 miles without peeing, but with the time it will take me to do 26 miles, I'll have to pee at least once and the idea of stopping in the middle of a race to wait in one of those looooong porta-potty lines drives me crazy.:goofy

probably a better concern is that I don't really eat or drink during runs, and I can manage that training for and running 13 miles. But if I'm going to run 26 miles, I'll have to develop better habits than that. I guess it's all part of training for a run of that length.
