Coexistence and Religion

Simply put, not simply answered: In an increasingly small world, can different religions coexist in peace? Why?

One of my current favorite bumper stickers is this one:

In an ideal world, there would be tolerance enough, and room enough, for all religions and belief systems to thrive. But historically, there are certain religions that seem anathema to one another - look at the countries of the Middle East, which have been at war with one another for all of recorded time. Will that conflict ever be resolved? I doubt it. Who's to say one religion is "better" than another? Who's to say that one country has the right to dictate another's belief system? Ridiculous.
