I've heard people say they take on something instead of giving up something, but truthfully it's harder for me to say no to myself than yes to other people :lol :blush

I'm no theologian, but I would think the positive effect of your choice should matter more than how difficult it is for you. Isn't the most important aspect of the Crucifixion the fact that it saved mankind? (I know the suffering of the Passion is also a salient point, but it seems like a lot of people have been tortured and suffered without the result being anything positive.)
Anyway, I'm not Catholic myself, but if there's a religious point of view that says it's a better form of sacrifice to volunteer at the kennel than to give up chocolate, I think I'd get behind that...not because it's easier, but because the outcome seems more positive. (Sorry if this totally misses the mark, since I'm not fully familiar with all the teachings and beliefs involved.)

Well, I joined a women's spiritual discussion group at church for Lent. Since that's not really my style :blush, that will be a sacrifice.

unhealthy living
Yes, I know that is very broad. I am going to undertake 6 weeks of no bad for you foods etc and a proactive approach to working out - more trips to the gym.
You know that Lent allows you to take weekends off, right? :lookaroun
I might even "go large" and abstain from meat on Fridays, so long as there are plenty of good sized shrimp available. :D
Since I'm not Catholic, any Lent observances are on house money anyhow. :lol

Just Sundays off as far as I know :lookaroun
So is it really just catholics who do this? I thought Lutherans and Methodists did as well. :dunno

I don't honestly know. How bad is that?

Just Sundays, at least for us Catholics. I had a friend in college who gave up alcohol for Lent. She'd go out with everyone else on Saturday nights as usual, just wouldn't start drinking until midnight. :rotfl

Wiki:
This practice [Lent] was virtually universal in Christendom until the Protestant Reformation.[2] Some Protestant churches do not observe Lent, but many, such as Lutherans, Methodists, and Anglicans do.
I just used Catholic as shorthand because I know Christy is (and honestly because I never really thought about who else did it. I know it was never mentioned in my little fundamentalist congregation as a kid.) :lol

I'm still not convinced I have to give anything up. :lol *this is one occasion when the Wikipedia authority is in question - the 99.9% of the rest of the time I find it very helpful. :lol

It's harder when the kids are young, and you're going in a million different directions, and on a million different schedules. It's easier later. :flower

I send Andy and the girls as family representatives :lol :blush
He likes it anyway :lookaroun No really, some of you know, he's always off on pilgrimages, watching EWTN and whatnot. :lol Funny story, at the last volleyball tournament, some of us who got there early to the hotel met in the "lobby" area, had a tv and eating area, and Lauren flipped EWTN on the tv and they just put the remote back down like that's what we were all going to watch. We all about died! :rotfl I said girls, you make me proud, but I'm not so sure the hotel people want a religious channel on their tv :lookaroun :lol

My brother just threatened to give up Facebook for Lent. I said WHAT! You can't do that! Those of us who live so very very far away rely on that to keep tabs on you :sadbye
I think I talked him out of it :lol (I hope?) He is not just some teenage kid on there for shits & giggles. That's long distance friends and family time!

I received a pretty detailed e-mail from my church about Lent yesterday, so . . . umm . . . I probably need to pay better attention. :lol
Yep, Methodists observe Lent, and I didn't eat any meat yesterday . . . until dinnertime. I'm doing pretty good with the stuff I gave up so far. How long has it been? We are at least halfway through, right? *sweats*

My sister and I were talking about what to give up for Lent, which is a funny conversation for lapse Catholics to have. I said I would give up sausages. She replied, "Well, then you've been practicing Lent since...how long have you broken up with Jason? :chair:rollseyes
So she's giving up refined sugar and red meat. I'm giving up red meat and I'm going to try very hard to be more positive about things and not so hard on myself....wait...I got lost there...are we discussing Lent or New Year's resolutions?:lookaroun
