I have, and on top of that, my local newspaper's website is sporting this news story of the hour:
USM, Tulane scientists say oil now in Gulf of Mexico food chain
SUN HERALD
OCEAN SPRINGS -- Scientists at The University of Southern Mississippi and Tulane University have found oil in the postlarvae of blue crabs entering coastal marshes along the Gulf Coast signaling that oil may be entering estuarine food chains.
Harriet Perry, director of the Center for Fisheries Research and Development at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, has found droplets of hydrocarbons or oil, in blue crab and fiddler crab larvae. According to Perry, the oil appears to be trapped between the hard, outer shell of the crab and its inner skin.
“I’ve been sampling in Mississippi coastal waters for 42 years and I have never seen this,” declared Perry. “My guess is that the crab picked up this oil offshore while in the megalopal (postlarval) stage and brought the oil with it when it came back to the marsh."
Tulane researcher, Dr. Caz Taylor has found orange-colored droplets in megalopae as far east as Pensacola, FL and as far west as Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in Louisiana, but analysis of these droplets has not been completed.
Perry sent samples to an independent lab in Florida which confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons. While the oil was tested, it was not specifically analyzed for the markers that would pinpoint it to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. However, Perry believes it is no coincidence that the timing of the oil spill matches finding oil in the crab. The Tulane samples are currently being analyzed at their laboratory and Perry and Taylor both cautioned that additional testing will be required to relate the oil to the recent spill.
Blue crabs are more than just a favorite food for humans; they are also a favorite food of a host of fish species that live in the marsh. Speckled trout and red fish feed heavily on the crustaceans. The food chain is now affected because whatever eats the crab will be affected, and so on.
Besides finding oil in the body of the crab, Perry’s group has begun seeing small fish with oil clinging to their bodies. “Oil on the fins decreases mobility and makes these fish easy prey for other species. This is yet another example of oil being incorporated into the food chain,” she added.

WAVELAND, MS (WLOX) - State officials have closed the beach and parts of Beach Boulevard in Waveland due to huge amounts of tar balls washing up on the shore and on the road.
The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality has closed the beach from Nicholson Avenue to the Silver Slipper Casino at Bayou Caddy.
MDEQ Director Trudy Fisher told WLOX News, "There's more coverage than we've seen anywhere. You can't walk anywhere on the beach without walking on it, stepping on it."
Fisher said the water is up to the seawall, bringing much more of the oily material to shore.
Hancock County Emergency Management Public Information Officer Jerry Beaugez told WLOX Beach Boulevard in Hancock County, from Sears Avenue to Lakeshore Road is also closed because of road construction and because tar balls are washing over the roadbed.

Awww :hugs gestational diabetes is pretty common and it should go away once the baby arrives. You are probably tired because of that (among other things :lookaroun ). Watching your sugar intake is good, but it's CARBS that you need to watch...bread, pasta, rice, some veggies and fruits. You will learn how much to eat as well as when and what type is best (complex NON processed carbs) when you go for your training.

Woman dies after falling from roller coaster ride
Posted: Jul 11, 2010 7:42 PM CDT Updated: Jul 12, 2010 11:27 AM CDT
BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A woman who fell from a roller coaster at a Baton Rouge amusement park Sunday afternoon is dead.
Lindsay Zeno, 21, of Lafayette was pronounced dead at a Baton Rouge hospital.
According to witnesses, she fell about 30 feet from the "Xtreme" at Blue Bayou Water Park/Dixie Landin' Amusement Park around 4 p.m.
The roller coaster, which opened three years ago, spins as it twists and turns along a steel track.
"The thing that goes over your chest came up and she was trying to put it down, pull it back over her, when she made that turn and I guess she couldn't pull it over her because the next thing you know, she was hitting the ground," said Tabbatha Arnold. "Everybody was just staring. That was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life."
Arnold claimed to be on the ride next to the "Xtreme."
The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal regulates amusement parks.
State Fire Marshal Butch Browning sent inspectors from his department to examine the coaster.
"There were no obvious failures," Browning said. "The track is still in place. The mechanical parts of the ride are still in place. The drives, electrical, everything seems to be fine right now, so our work is going to be long and tedious."
Browning said the ride was just checked out last month and no violations or mechanical problems were found.
Browning said the "Xtreme" will remain closed until the investigation into the deadly fall is completed.
"We're going to bring in some more of our experts over the next couple of days to physically operate this ride and put it under some test conditions, so we can understand exactly what happened. When someone dies or someone is hurt, we owe an explanation and I certainly take that responsibility very seriously," he explained.
He added the manufacturer of the roller coaster will also examine the ride.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is conducting a joint investigation with the state fire marshal's office.
Dixie Landin' Amusement Park issued a statement following Sunday's tragedy.
"We are all saddened by this terrible accident. An investigation by the state fire marshal's office has begun to try and determine the cause. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time."
The incident was not the first at the park in which someone fell from a ride, but the victim survived last time.
A two-year-old boy broke his arms and legs when he fell from a ride four years ago.
According to the official investigation, Kobe Carter fell 25 feet from the "Over the Rainbow" ride on June 9, 2006.
According to the lawsuit filed by the boy's parents, the park claimed children younger than 8 or shorter than 48 inches tall could ride with a parent.
The boy's parents said no height requirements were posted when the accident happened.
Coincidentally, that ride had also been in operation about three years at the time of the fall.
Days before that incident, Diana Landry of St. Tammany Parish file a lawsuit was filed over the "Conja" ride.
"The raft landed and the force from the speed of the raft caused the passenger in the seat in front of Ms. Landry to be thrown forward and then backwards, causing her head to strike Ms. Landry in the face," the suit stated.
It claimed the ride was not equipped with any safety restraints, belts, harness and/or protective equipment to prevent an accident of this nature.
***
To my muddled mind, the harness opening up and allowing a person to be dumped out as the coaster is spinning upside down would be an "obvious failure." :no

Thanks all!! Oh, I definitely know that taking care of myself means taking care of the baby, which is why I'm so determined. It's hard, considering I love sweets AND carbs, but I'm doing the best I can for now while I wait for training. I'll feel better once I've had that, I think. A guide to follow, in black and white. And a meter to check my blood sugar levels with, I assume. I'll be sure to keep you all posted!
As for the time flying by, I know it will! Time is already flying. But right now, it's funny how it all still seems so far away. I think in August (or even beginning of September) is when I'll finally start to feel like it's getting close. Either way, I know I can't wait to hold her in my arms!

Figure I should check in...:lookaroun
You guys may not see too much of me for a little while. As you all know, I'm working for a new ball team this summer. Notice I said "working" and not "interning" this time around.
Early on in this summer, I came really close to quitting but was convinced to stick it out for a little longer. Things were rough, I had almost no work to do, and what they wanted from me was sort of pointless. Two or three weeks in, I got pulled into my direct boss' office with him and one other manager. Apparently I had impressed them all and they wanted to know if I was on board with staying full time. I wasn't happy, but I can be unhappy for a little while with some money, so I said yes. I would know for sure by the end of the week if I was going to be hired on full time.
Time passed and....nothing. The time frame to add me to the roster kept getting extended, to the point where it currently sits, which is October. Fine, whatever. I made it a point to find more work and went from intern to Box Office Manager, and no one on staff but myself calls me an intern anymore.
Two or three weeks ago, our Account Executive (ground level position, sells tickets and stuff) just, walks out. My workload doubled. Whatever, Its still less than I did at the old place.
The other night, my boss, the only NON INTERN in the department told me and the other guy that hes leaving after our next homestand because he was offered an amazing job.
Guess who is going to be running the ticketing department? :chair
If I screw this up, we're going down in flames, and it could kill my career before it really even starts.
If I do well, then I could possibly be the Director of Ticketing by summer's end.
Pretty heavy when you consider I only just graduated in May. So, I'm not dead, just not around.

You WILL NOT go down in flames. I can promise you that, and I'm never wrong.:lookaroun
You probably will run into problems and rough spots, but when that happens maintain perspective. Nothing you can do will bankrupt the ball-club and no problem needs to be solved IMMEDIATELY.
The biggest mistake I see at my work when a problem comes up is that people panic. They don't know the answer immediately and they have visions of the world collapsing because of that. In my approximatley 20 years of working here, I've encountered more seemingly insurmountable problems than I can remember or even begin to number, but I've managed to work every one of them out. When I hear a problem, I think to myself: "Okay, this is tough. I'm not sure what to do . . . but I'll figure it out."
And when I work on it with that attitude, I'm always able to reason my way through to an acceptable answer.

Many of you may remember my late girlfriend Sue. Our mutual friend who got us together arranged for a fund raising concert in her memory, which took place to a full house on Saturday with barely a dry eye in the audience or on the stage.
I kept my composure through most, but lost it in the finale. We performed Rainbow Connection - from The Muppet Movie. Sue wanted it played at her funeral, but could only find the Kermit version and decided against it. Hence our performing this new arrangement. I was not alone in getting choked up.

It was an emotional Saturday on Stage in Treorchy Wales.
Here's a link to an article in the press prior to the night

Thanks guys! Its got less to do with being a girl then it does that I've only actually been with the team (and out of school) for like nine weeks. There are just no other options I guess, and they seem to figure I can handle it. The higher ups keep telling me that the general consensus is that they were lucky that I sort of just fell into their lap, and they really want me to stick around. Its a much bigger jump than I was expecting. I was just hoping to intern for the summer and either A) get a ground level job in the fall, or B) save up enough money so that when they DIDN'T hire me, I could afford to go to the baseball winter meetings at the Swan and Dolphin.

Funny story - when I first found out I was pregnant with Sara, I was determined that absolutely everything I ate would be healthy, and every meal would be perfectly balanced. I was also convinced that avoiding morning sickness was simply mind over matter, and certainly wouldn't affect ME. I was teaching at the time, and I packed that first lunch the day after I got the results of the pregnancy test with great care and attention to health food books - every food group was properly represented, low-sodium and high-protein. I also brought a nice, big bottle of V-8 juice to drink (after my 8 ounces of skim milk, of course). I sat down, unwrapped my lunch, and turned this color -> :sick. I poured the V-8 juice down my throat, BARELY managed to keep it down, threw the rest of my lunch in the nearest trash bin, and have NEVER been able to face V-8 since. :rotfl
Oh, and from that moment on, I was sick not just in the morning, but ALL DAY LONG - for almost the entire nine months. With BOTH kids. :goofy :rotfl

To some, losing a job means hitting the streets with a resume or wallowing in grief. But for Marisa, it meant getting the sewing machine out and upcycling thrifted fashions. Every day.
“I was just in this not-feeling-good, crummy kind of mood, and I didn’t know how to kick it,” says Marisa. That’s when Marisa saw the movie, Julie & Julia. “[Julie] was finding something to do every day that made her feel great. I was jealous. I thought, I want to find that.”
Thus, New Dress A Day entered the blogosphere. The task: To make a new fashion piece a day — on a budget of a dollar a day — for an entire year.

Same here. :rotfl And I was most definitely NOT one of those people who allowed cameras in the delivery room, either. We did have a video camera set up, in the corner, where you can't see "anything". It was very tastefully done. Still not something that I was wanting everyone who came through our front door to see (which Oddie showed each and every one of them), but I'm glad I have them. It's very interesting to see the difference between Nichiolas delivery and Ashley's. With Nicholas, there was no joking around. Everyone was very serious. He was needing to get him out of there and using all of his body weight with the forcepts. With Ashely, the Dr. and nurses were joking around, ect.

I think I know where they were going with this. They wanted to make a play or the whole sweet/salty taste that is quite the fad now. But if that were the case, then they should have chosen a softer sweeter bun like the Hawaiian burger buns (http://www.auntmillies.com/products/ProductView.aspx?prod=3378&cat=Buns). There's just a hint of sweetness and not overpoweringly sweet like the Krispy Kremes.
And guess who thought of the donut burger first?

Sara tried Nutrisystem for almost a year before giving up on it completely. She said she was hungry all the time, craved "normal" food, and even her workouts didn't help produce results. She's been on Weight Watchers for just a few weeks, and has lost 10 pounds, never feels hungry, and eats, as she puts it, REAL food. :rotfl She only has a little bit more to go to be back to her pre-Katie weight.

Of course you can have some cake! You just have to balance out the other carbs you will having; skip the bread/rice/pasta that might be there and make sure you drink plenty of water to flush it out of your system.
I realize that being pregnant that you are on a tighter leash (so to speak), but diabetics can eat the same thing as everyone else even white sugar (in controlled amounts). It's all about balance.

Yep!! The due date is September 26th, however, the doctor told us this week that because of the gestational diabetes, he likes to deliver at 39 weeks, as long as my cervix is "favorable" :lol If I go into labor naturally before then, that works too, but 39 weeks is the end in sight if not! So now I'm giving my cervix a daily "pep talk" to urge it to be doing all the dialating and effacing by 39 weeks. The baby is already moving down, so I'm taking that as a good sign.

Yeah, I've actually discovered that too, on my own. As a whole, I try to stay away from super sweet things right now, but when I have to satisfy my sweet tooth, I go with no sugar added and sugar free things. Publix has awesome sugar free popsicles and no sugar added ice cream bars that really help me control things. Luckily, tomorrow, there won't be any pasta or rice in sight! There will be bread on the sub rings, and there'll be pizza, but I know how much to eat to keep my sugar down. My best friend tomorrow will be the BBQ chicken from Sonny's! ;)

It was an amazing day yesterday! Everyone that said they'd be here showed up, which I wasn't expecting! (You know there's always someone who RSVP's "yes" and then doesn't show.) A good time was had by all, though by the end of it I was pretty hot and tired. I'm glad we had it here at our house, or I would have had to cut it short if we were somewhere else, I think.
As for all the goodies - HOLY COW!!! I can't even begin to list everything we got. Tons of diapers and wipes (yay!), LOTS of clothes (my best friend went overboard), toys, a bathtub, a diaper bag (though I think I might need to get a bigger one... I've read having two, a smaller and a larger, is a good idea?), a video monitor (thanks Mom), and all kinds of a supplies for a changing table, plus a gift card to purchase the changing table (thanks again, Mom!). I'm sure there's more, but it's just so much stuff!! This little girl is definitely set.

My niece got her hubby a "Daddy diaper bag (http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/62134?pi=1008687&qs=3012739-Google_Base&subrnd=0)" so he wouldn't have to carry around a girly one when they are out together without her. 5 years ago today, Hurricane Katrina came ashore near Pearlington, MS. I remember being huddled in the closet of the master bedroom, power out, listening to the am radio broadcast of WWL 870 out of New Orleans - they were ecstatic that they had dodged a bullet (so they thought). A local station was broadcasting listeners' call ins with horrific stories. I remember one frantic caller reporting that there were people in an second story Gulfport apartment building stranded as water was rising, already to waist level and there were small children present.
Some numbers from today's newspaper:
168 deaths in the 3 Mississippi coastal counties;
329,870 customers without power after the storm (I was in that number!)
64,000 MS homes destroyed
$3 billion in federal funding spent to help individuals and families meet basic needs and begin to recover
21,152 Red Cross relief workers from all 50 states (Thank You!!!)
21,339 less residents in the 3 coastal counties today compared to before
Those are just the Mississippi numbers. God bless New Orleans and Louisiana for the death and destruction they sustained/endured as well!
May it never happen again!

We left WDW to drive to NY the day before and drove through rain the entire way. I remember the news stories and pictures. I checked in on Magic because I know we had a lot of people from the area and they were trying to keep a listing of all the people who were checking in.
I read that you were going to ride out the storm and then spent days looking to see if you guys were ok. I know I sent a PM to you and praying for an answer...thank God you were safe, but I wanted to smack you for staying! :lol

I remember that back on magic, Mad had posted that she hadn't heard from you, and we said prayers for your family's safety. I didn't really know you then, but it was "one of our own."
God Bless the several thousand ham radio operators, many of whom spent several weeks all along the Gulf Coast providing emergency communications and health and welfare reports. That sparked a wake up call regarding emergency communications in all parts of the country including state and especially on the local levels to have some sort of emergency plan in place.
Doug and I had become friends not too long before that and I remember replying to a post and saying something like I don't know your name but... (we had just all started calling each other by our real names back then). It was after Katrina that a lot of relationships changed and I still have the PM that Doug sent back to me in response to mine telling him we were all hoping things were ok. :blush

I really wanted to go with my mom to help, but was unable because I didn't have anyone to stay with the kids.

Hello folks.
Been busy fixing up my apartment and putting on the market.
Unfortunately, a lot of property developers bought up houses in my neighbourhood and converted them to apartments, so it's a buyers market and prices have plummeted.
At the same time I'm looking at places in Glastonbury. So all being well, the apartment will go at a reduced price - it's below the market average, is bigger than the tiny converted jobs and unlike most comes with a parking space. Then we can see what is affordable in Glastonbury. Looking to get something with three bedrooms. By American standards they are very expensive and very small, but there are some possibilities out there.

Last week, we all headed to a lodge near Ledbury to enjoy the English Summer.
The English summer lived up to it's reputation and it pelted with rain most days.
We still managed to get out and about and here are some snaps
The area where the lodge was located:
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37e.jpg
The Lodge:
http://images.fotopic.net/13r374.jpg
Room for Helen, myself, my folks, Helen's mum and Sam.
For the sci-fi geeks a nearby museum had some interesting exhibits
The new Cybermen
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37g.jpg
The flying miniature Starbug from Red Dwarf.
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37h.jpg
Assorted versions of Daleks

One of the quaint back streets of Ledbury
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37x.jpg
At Gloucester Cathedral, they had a lot of modern art. Quite a lot of it disturbing and a little out of place. As well as a skeleton praying at one of the alters, they have this monstrosity greeting you as you enter through the main door:
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37j.jpg
A figure (not Christ as there is no crown and a modern hairstyle) on a cross covered in giant pins and in excruciating pain. A real contender for my WTF of the year award.
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37k.jpg
What has a Nazi German helmet on machine guns got to do with the Cathedral?
A spooky figure in the corridors
http://images.fotopic.net/13r37l.jpg
If anyone thinks the corridor is familiar - they filmed chunks of Harry Potter films 1,2 and 6 here.
The crypt. Also looking like it fell out of a Harry Potter film

On to a different cathedral - in Hereford. Some modern art here, but not as bizarre. I quite liked this gold crown suspended over the altar:

If you had read the article, you would know they switched the rivalries because of UAT vs UT. Ping is the new social networking tool on iTunes. It's similar to FB and MySpace but it's A LOT easier to control in terms of privacy controls. Very easy. Like stupid one eyed monkey with half a brain easy. Not complicated like FB's. So, you'll set up a profile page just like you do with FB, but again, it's much simpler. The most time consuming part is choosing which artist and music you want featured on your profile page. You get to choose 8 artists or songs. And you also get to "follow" or "like" artists. If you follow your favorite artists, then every time they update their profile, it'll show up on your Ping newsfeed. It's very similar to FB but for music.
Your profile would look like this:
http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/ping-profile.jpg
It's still in the early stages, and it's already gotten some problems, but if you're a heavy iTunes user and your friends and family are as well, it might be worthwhile to see their favorite music and such. I think you can even recommend music to people on your list.

Interesting. I think Facebook left the door open for competitors by putting so much of an emphasis on corporate interests by trying to link up with websites etc. and I think that left many people cold . . . but what can they do if Facebook is pretty much the only game in town.
I'll let you people dabble and let me know when it's time to get a Ping account.:goofy

That seems pretty spiffy!! I don't use iTunes a lot, though I'd like to. And, of course, this could encourage me to use it more... hmmmm.... I'll have to think about it. If I want to start it, I should probably do so before the baby gets here, huh? :)

ANYONE in the psychiatric field can assure you that people who torture small animals work their way right up to bigger things, without any sense of wrongdoing. And posting a video of himself doing it? A sociopath, for sure. I'm with Christy - what's next for this kid?

I was induced with both of mine. My body just didn't seem to want to go into labor, especially with Nicholas. They said I was having contractions, but I sure didn't feel them (not until after being induced). I almost went into labor with Ashley on my own. When I went in to be induced, the Dr. said I would have gone on my own that day or the next. I wasn't feeling the contractions with her either. If I were to have had another one, I would have tried natural since I don't seem to feel it. :lol

So, I realized that I should probably post this here, just in case any of you missed it on Facebook (some of you said I don't show up in your news feed).
I'm being induced on Tuesday, the 21st, at 4:00am :circles :faint Here's hoping the labor moves quickly!! I'll post pictures on Facebook as soon as I can (and who are we kidding, with an iPhone, it'll be almost the minute she's born LOL). And before any of you have to ask, I'm being induced because my doctor likes to do it that way when gestational diabetes is involved, and I have no problems with this :)
Holy cow, I'm going to be a mommy soon!
Yaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!! :circles :hugs :hugs :hugs
You still don't show up on facebook for me for some reason, so I'll go stalking for pictures :lookaroun

Thinking good thoughts for you. I hope people do think to post things like this here, because I didn't see anything on Facebook. Facebook doesn't seem to have any way to prioritize and recognize the difference between real news like this and someone posting that they're getting ready to make a peanut butter sandwich.

WooHoo!!
I saw that when you posted. :D
I check "Status updates" every morning and I also have my friends broken up into lists so I can check up on those I want to (and ignore the rest :lookaroun ).

Should I go with Jif, Skippy or Peter Pan BTW? :-/
(Great news, Lindsay! Best of wishes that you and baby are healthy, relaxed and enjoying some bonding time a week from now.)
