Great pics Doug. :)

Glad you all enjoyed the race photos. I had a fun time taking them. :lol Regina, I see the resemblance and wonder if that is her.

Here is a link (http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=17958794&pg=personal&fr_id=27330&fl=en_US&et=L4qVrMyteWfQGOmX68Sowg..&s_tafId=508656) to my fund raising page for the American Cancer Society. I hope that link loads properly if you click it. It has a very brief recap of the race, nothing like the reports in here and at wdwmagic.

I am having a little issue with the American Cancer Society right now because people who sent checks instead of making online donations with their credit card aren't showing up as being credited for their donations. In all, around $3,500 was contributed by friends and family for the American Cancer Society. Wow! I am humbled by people's generosity.

Does anyone know what's going on with registration for next year? If I remember correctly, last year I registered a day or two after the race, but I can't find anything now.:shrug

Am I just missing it, or is registration not open yet?

I sort of hope they're re-thinking the size. I think they should trim things down a little from where they were this year.

With all the activity during the week, I neglected to properly thank Scott and Doug for their help during our travel day from hell.

While we were stuck in Philadelphia Scott gave us the closing time for packet pick-up so we knew what kind of schedule we had to work with. He also gave us a contact number for the organizers (which, unfortunately, went to a recording that said they were busy with the race and out of the office for the weekend:huh . . . but that's just how our day was going).

Doug offered to pick up our packets and, when I pointed out that they'd probably insist on having our signed waivers, he went so far as to offer to act as our agent with power of attorney . . . and while I wouldn't have imposed that far, it was a very generous offer.

Later, when it seemed very unlikely we'd make it, he spoke with one of the top people there to see what he could do and she told him that we'd be able to get our bibs and D-tags at the race-site the next day. That helped not only to ease our concerns, but was welcome news to approximately 10 other people who were in a similar situation.

Thanks very much to both of you!:thumbs

I was giving blood on Friday and a guy next to me heard that I had just come back from Disney Marathon weekend and he told me about the Nashville half marathon. It is probably the same one Scott once ran. Anyway, he said 30,000 people ran it. Yikes!

Also from this morning's Walt Disney World resort update at mouseplanet.com, this confirmation of the March registration dates for 2012:

"…Registration opening dates have been announced for the 2011 Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon (February 14) and the 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon, Half Marathon, Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge and other 2012 Marathon Weekend races (March 15)."

It will probably save me money that they wait until mid-March to sign people up for the next year. The last two years, I had this mental boost from finishing the races that fired me up to make an early commitment to run an even longer race the following year. If they had been offering registration at the finish line and had thrown in a registration discount, that might have been hard to pass up.

I think a lot of people finish the race and think: "I'll go faster or longer next year." that's why it seems strange that they'd hold off on registration. It seems like they'll miss out on some of that early excitement.

I wonder if they're trying to steer more people into the Wine and Dine. I've been thinking about trying that. Maybe they figure if they open registration on that earlier than Jan., some people will jump in that one.:shrug

There's the Wonder Woman. I was trying to figure out if she/he was a man or a woman. Looks like it's probably a woman from that photo.

I was behind her for a while in the half (that's when I was trying to figure out if it was a man or woman), but that photo looks like it's from the full, so she must have done the Goofy. Does the blue bib mean Goofy? I also saw the Mr. Incredible guy, so I'm gussing they're a pair.

Yes, the blue bib is for the Goofy challenge. Funny that you use the phrase "Wonder Woman" and "they're a pair" in the same paragraph. :lookaroun

:lol

Doing the races in costume on back to back days means sitting around some hotel's laundry room washing out the Wonder Woman costume. Do you suppose that drew any curious looks? :lol

Does anyone else have any interest in the back half of the Coast to Coast challenge? I know it's a longer trip, but the idea of running through all 6 American Disney parks in a year is pretty exciting for me...along with the extra bling. I haven't signed up for DL yet, but in my mind, it's a done deal.

Thanks. I'm just waiting for some fundage to free up (gotta give my credit card a chance to recover from this last trip, and like I said on FB, I'm really determined to kill my student loan in the next few weeks). Upon further inspection, I think they're actually confusing me with the very pretty dark-skinned girl behind him (her bib number looks just like mine at a glance, but I'm guessing the last number is an 8, not a 6).

Which means that somewhere right now a beautiful young woman is opening her personalized marathon page to find...a pasty white guy with a disgusting stained sweatband staring at her. :huh :lol

As a special thank you for participating in this year’s marathon weekend, you can come back next year and save! Because if you register for the 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon by May 15, 2011, you’ll have the chance to enjoy $20 off your race entry fee*! That’s in addition to the published early registration savings. So be on the lookout for an email containing the coupon code you'll need to enter to receive your $20 discount during online registration**! And remember...registration opens March 15, 2011.I'm assuming that all the 2011 runners got this. Sweet deal for next year, considering that Disney hardly ever gives you money off of anything.

I can only gather Disney was not completely thrilled with 2011's registration numbers. First, they offered the free ticket for full marathon finishers as registration lagged and now this.

A great deal of a discount on top of a discount for returning runners, and an early registration discount for those first timers. :lookaroun

I am up early because I have a one hour drive to a 5 mile race this morning. Should be cool weather (cold, even), and the bad news is there are hills involved. :lol

I've heard a smattering of people say that they won't run Disney because the cost is excessive.

BeeJay
01-22-2011, 04:57 PM
What really gets me about Disney is that the Goofy challenge costs more than the full and half combined. You would think they'd give you a break for doing both, but instead they tack on extra 40 bucks or so. I know they have to pay for the 3rd medal, but that's just weird to me. They don't charge you an extra fee for the Coast to Coast challenge, far as I know.

I've never understood that. You don't pay extra for the coast-to-coast. Maybe they figure if you're insane enough to run both races, then you're too incompetent to add up the cost and see the discrepancy.

There was a separate lanyard called "the perfect Goofy" for people who have done the Goofy challenge all 6 years. Instead of reading 39.3, it listed the total mileage of six years' worth of Goofy challenges.

There probably are some administrative costs that justify at least some extra fee, but I'm sure they're making a healthy profit on it as well.

And I doubt many people say: "Well at $30, I'd do it, but I'm not paying $40."

With Goofy registration, I did get the three tee shirts, special Goofy challenge bibs for both races and the Goofy medal, but only one goody bag.

Doing separate registration, I got two goody bags. :shrug

I am reminded that the Goofy registration was over $300, and that is a lot to pay for a race weekend. Not something I'd be able to do every year, that's for sure!

It is hard to imagine that there could be a marathon event more fun than the Disney, so I am sure that I will be back in a couple years or so, but it is time for me to explore some other races for comparison. :)

Wow, that is a lot of money to put out, but what a feat! Truly amazing.

After that week in Florida, I went to Maryland for 2 weeks for training for work. While there, my younger brother's wife had their 1st baby! Oh, he is so cute! They live in Maryland so I was able to pop by and see them and the baby. Just adorable.

Anyway, I was only able to work out minimally in the hotel.

My plan now is to work on building up some muscle through March and maybe do some interval cardio training. Then back to running in the Spring. Well, jogging.

Doug11

that sounds like a very reasonable plan. My plan, on the other hand, has been to drink beer and eat pizza and run another full marathon in 2 weeks.

Well, the beer and pizza wasn't really a "plan" but it certainly worked out that way. :lol

congrats on the nephew!

Aww, man.

The friend in whose honor I raised money for the American Cancer Society during this year's Goofy Challenge passed away last night.

I took the time to go and see him in the hospital last week when we knew it was only a matter of days. Up until that point, he wouldn't let people visit because he didn't want people seeing him not at his best.

So sad - he leaves behind a child in her 11th grade year of high school and a son the same age as mine - a freshman in college, and a wife of almost 30 years.

Yeah, I was sort of thinking the same thing . . . though if we're going to talk about it . . . which we might just do before registration . . . wouldn't it be more appropriate on a 2012 thread rather than 2011?:lookaroun

I think we should set a goal to talk at least two more people into joining us. Christy? Gordon? Oz? Sherman? I say if anyone shows even a hint of interest we pounce on them.:whistle

I may join up later! I definitely wanna do it, but I wanna make sure money and scheduling will allow it before I fork over the non-refundable fee.

But I got me a new pair of running shoes today! :D Finally got un-lazy enough to drive into downtown Seattle to Fleet Feet Sports. Awesome store! Great staff, too. I spent about 30-45 minutes trying different pairs of shoes and getting fitted, and settled on this one:

http://www.saucony.com/commonimages/saucony/700x700/10053-1_1_700x700.jpg
Saucony Progrid Guide 3 (http://www.saucony.com/store/SiteController/saucony/productdetails?catId=cat10002&productId=prod90007&skuId=***4********10053-1*M090&stockNumber=10053-1&showDefaultOption=true)

Got in a little 3-miler when I got home to start breaking them in! :D

I've been wearing Saucony for about 3 1/2 years now...have loved every pair save for my last one. Good shoes.

xfkirsten
02-09-2011, 12:35 AM
I tried on a Mizuno pair, a New Balance pair, and I think an Asics pair as well. Of all four, I liked that the Saucony had more of a form-fit, particularly around my arches. The Mizuno and New Balance ones felt really "boxy" on my feet, and the Asics pair I tried was one of those lightweight ones. They felt weird on me, and before I could even say so, the staff guy was all, "yeah, so that pair is out." Of the three left, the Saucony was a bit more expensive (the others were older models that were on sale) but I definitely felt better in them.

Now I just gotta break 'em in! Felt a bit rough on the first run - they're still new and stiff. The toe on these is also a bit more rounded than my old ones, so I'm getting used to a little extra "roll" forward on them.

Keeping the old ones for trail running, though, especially given the muddy, mucky state that even our best trails are in this time of year.

Hooker
02-09-2011, 07:56 AM
And that's what sold me on the Saucony the first time I laced them up--I could feel them literally wrap around my arches. I may look at some Brooks next time, but I'm sure I'll probably go back to Saucony.

2012 registration opens tomorrow.

Good news - Disney is offering early registration discounts.

Better news - Disney is also offering discount codes for an extra $20 savings on top of the early registration discount. :D

That is great news for 2012 runners, and is the right thing for Disney to do. Those races have gotten ridiculously expensive and the discounts do matter!

I clicked on the e-mail link to see what the cost will be with the discounts, but I guess I can't find that out until the registration opens at noon tomorrow. :shrug

Crap! I've got one of those too and got nothing. :lol Speaking of the Disney CC, they sent a renewal card for Joy, Sarah's will be tomorrow, and they didn't send me one. So, I told them I needed a new one also and they are putting a rush shipment on it via UPS, but it's got to go to my work address since I won't be at home. No problem to do that, but they've gotta ask me some security questions to do that. So, they start asking questions like what color is my car, what is the last car I leased or owned. All this came from "public records", but they said that only I would know the answers to the questions to prevent fraud. Scary stuff.

:lol

At our tournament a couple weeks ago, I just randomly sat by a mom... who asked me about my shoes, and was I a runner :blink :rotfl I said well... I dabble LOL! She is a walker, and she WALKS marathons, but fast enough that she passes the slower runners and is within the time limits! She was trying to get me to do the columbus half in October. I said it was on my list of things to do last year til school (and volleyball) started. So I think I'll go for it this year. IF I head to Disney in Jan. (which seems as unrealistic then as it was this year... I'd have to go by myself if I came at all) I'd like to have some experience before hand.
